How long does it take for fluconazole (Diflucan) to work on ringworm? I have a terrible ringworm infection that I mistakenly treated with 1% hydrocortisone cream for the past few months, and it's worsened incredibly since then. My physician diagnosed it as ringworm, and prescribed griseofulvin and lotrimin. At first, the lotrimin helped considerably and cleared up the rash in a few days, but it started to become itchy, and, in my stupidity, I put a little hydrocortisone cream on it. Now it's spread to the other side of my neck and is constantly either burning, itching, crusting, or oozing clear liquid. My doctor took me off of those medications and now has me taking 200 mg of fluconazole once a week. I took my first dosage today, and my rash is less itchy now, but I think that's due to the calamine lotion he recommended. Is this fluconazole even going to work on my tinea corporis? Should I buy some lamisil cream? I know that fluconazole only inhibits the growth of the fungus, but if I could find something to kill it outright, that'd... be better.

hlizzy21 replied: "You should begin to notice a considerable difference 24 hours after your first dose of diflucan. I would stick witht the calamine lotion, using a new cotton ball for each spot so you dont spread it. I had ringworm once as a teenager, my mom just got some over the counter anti-fungal from the store, I applied that serveral times a day when needed and after showers, it went away in no time. Best of luck to you."

cookinB4U replied: "I remember that it was 3 weeks to three months. Stubborn stuff, isn't it? I found TOLNAFTATE cream at the $.96 store and this seemed to help me although it didn't kill it and it always seems to be lurking around and waiting to flare up again."

is it safe to use lamisil at cream on a dog? i think my dog has ringworms on his stomach and i was just wondering if it is safe to put a little of the cream on it everyday until it goes away, or is it not safe for animal use?

regzad replied: "yes it's fine but you may want to get it checked out in case it's not ringworm"

al l replied: "No, lamisil is made to absorb into the skin on humans. Dogs have more active oil glands producing a protective layer of oil on their skin. Lamasil can not soak in and can be ingested by the dog when he licks his coat. Your best bet would be to go to the vet who will most likely prescribe Panalog ointment or animax ointment to apply."

Jess replied: "While it can be used, you MUST make sure the dog can't lick it. You also need to have the dog seen by a vet, as sarcoptic mange can look like ringworm as well. Both are contagious to people, and both have different treatments as ringworm is a fungus, and mange is a mite. Before starting any sort of treatment have the dog seen by your vet for a proper diagnoses. The longer you wait to do that the harder it can be to treat. It could also be other types of infections or rashes as well. As a precaution put a doggie shirt on your dog to help prevent possible spore spread if it is in fact ringworm."

When do Ringworm symptoms typically disappear? I have been taking oral medication(Grifulvin) for ringworm for approximately one week along with an anti-fungal cream (Lamisil). The symptoms have yet to subside and don't show any sign of improvement. A few of the circles are starting to scab over but the remainder that cover my chest and arms are fairly inflammed. Has anyone had any direct experience with this? How long does it take for the symptoms to disappear? My doctor presribed the oral medication for only three weeks and I'm worried it may not be long enough.

unique562h replied: "I have 9 spots of ringworm from a cute little persian kitten I got 2 weeks ago. My 6 year old also has 2 spots. My doctor prescribed Lotrisone it's starting to clear up after only 2 days. I can't use it on my daughter so I have to use Clotrimazole 1% (Lotrimin AF) it's taking about a weeks but my daughters is starting to go away too. Good luck."

How does feces affect the scalp? Ringworm, or other infections? Concerns that toddler scalp rash persisted so long. Tried griseofulvin oral, nystatin cream, and lamisil on supposed ringworm of scalp.

lcmcpa replied: "The best treatment for ringworm is a topical cream, spray, ointment or gel, used for 4 weeks. if that does not cure it, it is probably NOT ringworm, but something else. Most pediatricians do not recommend an oral medication until topical has been used. If it is ringworm and the topical doesn't cure it, then the doctor will give you a Rx."

A follow up to my last ringworm question.? I asked a question about ringworm earlier in the week and got some good answers, so I decided to ask a follow-up question. I bought the Lamisil cream for the ringworm on my face and applied it, but is it supposed to dry the ringworm up and make it peel off of me? What I mean is, the ringworm is now dry and flaking off of me (or my skin, rather). So I'd like to know if that means its working or just irritating my skin further. Thanks,

razberryriki replied: "Its working, the virus is dieing and it kills the skin that was affected, it will all heal up."

Dashing Geek replied: "I did not have that happen when I used it, but it can affect different people in different ways, I suppose. If you can tolerate it I would keep going. If not, ask the druggist for a different antifungal."

Carrie replied: "I had ring worm on my leg and i went to the doctor and they gave me a pill and some special lotion ... well what it does is it drys up and looks flaky and it will peel and if you tan like I was it will take away your tan ... thank good i got it after prom because i had a perfect white circle on my leg .... if i where you def. go to the doctor because the stuff thy give works wonders .. and if you think it is growing which it will do if you dont go to the doctors .... than please go cause i didnt at first and mine just kept on growning till i went .... good luck ..."

Momof3boys replied: "It sounds like it's working. Sometimes over the counter anti fungal creams can take longer to get rid of ringworm compared to prescription lotion. It says that it can take 2-4 weeks of use to resolve the fungus, so don't stop taking it even if it looks better before then. Also, make sure your washing your bedding everyday and use a clean towel, (every time), after you bathe. Oh and make sure that the infected area is thoroughly dry, cause it thrives in moisture. By doing this, it will help prevent the fungus from spreading to other parts of your body. There's a whole bunch of other preventive stuff you can do if your worried about it spreading."

Will this ringworm ever go away?? This spot started on my leg over a year ago. I had no clue that it was a ringworm untill I saw the doctor for something else and asked her about it. She said it was a ringworm and to use antifungal cream. I have been using Lamisil faithfully twice a day for 2 weeks now and it doesnt look any different. I dont know what to do. I have read many home remedies but most of them also said that Lamisil works great. Could it be that it will take a very long time to get rid of it since I have had it for so long, or does someone have any better ideas to get rid of it?? It started off small but its now at least the size of a silver dollar, and after looking at many photos of them Im pretty darn sure thats whaat it is. Please help! Thank you.

katrina replied: "Garlic works quite well. If you can get a small glass jar (buy a jar of baby food and wash it out) put some olive or canola oil in it. Take 2 cloves of garlic and cut them in half. Place them in oil. Leave overnight. Throw out garlic and keep oil. Put oil on daily few times a day if you can. Yes..it smells like garlic. But it does work remarkably well. Tea Tree Oil (health food stores) can also be applied - one drop over the area. You can alternate one or the other. Garlic oil at night, and tea tree oil day time. It does take a while to go away...but within a week you should notice a difference. Also clean up your diet. Yeast/Candida is what can cause it in the first place. Cut down sugars and yeasty foods..etc"

sillyoleme replied: "The only remedy I've ever used (or heard of) for pets and humans involves using iodine. It's an anti-fungal ointment, often used for disinfecting too. This article outlines the simple steps: The iodine will clean and dry out the fungus, and the article gives several tips on how to apply it and keep the ringworm from spreading. Good luck!"

How do you get rid of persistent ringworm? If you keep getting ringworm and it goes every time you treat with Daktarin or Lamisil but comes back even if you use the cream for a few months. What else can you do to clear it out once and for all? There don't seem to be any other underlying conditions, just sensitive areas of the skin that keep getting it.

Charlotte H replied: "I had it once! Went to my doc and got a cream to put on it! Never had it again! You get it from the woods and pets, so don't pick any flowers! lol! That's how i got it!"

Riley replied: "You need to thoroughly disinfect your house. Ringworm is not only spread by skin to skin contact, the virus can also be in the surfaces of your house. If these areas go without being cleaned, chances are high that you will continue to develop ringworm."

Doc8 replied: "Has it been cultured or diagnosed by a dermatologist? Other conditions closely resemble ringworm. The dog fungus Microsporum canis is the most common. Do you have a dog or cat?"

piethedog replied: "My son had one on his head when he was 4 or 5, we liked to have never gotten rid of it. He had to go on steroids & got cream from doc. OTC creams did NOTHING! He had it for several months."

Ringworm - 15 rings on my back. Is it ok to put cream all over? It's hard to get at just the rings...? thanks much for help with this. at the moment i'm using clotrimazole (prescription). tried lamisil for a while, didn't work. Also... is it all right to switch between medications? you try to get an appointment with your gp for this over the holidays! the walk-in doctor i saw was very conservative and wouldn't put me on an oral antifungal because there's a slim chance of liver damage. web info suggests that with either severe or widespread cases that's the way to go, but... he's old-school, and not a specialist (didn't agree with me that you can get ringworm from some source other than cats and dogs; i know - from webmd, actually :) - this isn't true). just wondered if anyone else had encountered this and knew from personal experience if 1) i could put clotrimazole on healthy tissue without ill effects as it's nearly impossible for me to reach just the affected areas (have had some help these days, but won't soon), and 2) whether i could switch back to the lamisil after a few days with the clotrimazole/corticosteroid combo - no longer need the steroid as inflammation not so much a concern and my skin is drying out.

Doc replied: "It's a fungal infection. Continue to put the clotrimazole on it. After the symptoms have gone, continue to apply the medication for another two weeks."

babygirl4300 replied: "Ring worms are a fungus and sometimes home remedies don't work.Blue star ointments its good for ring worms also yeast infection cream will clear it up.If you have more than 2 ring worms and over the counter products doesn't work please see your doctor. Sometimes the doctor has to prescribe antibiotics for the ring worms."

crowfeathers replied: "I think it would be ok to apply to large area. Don't switch between the 2 medications because then you won't know which one is working. Make sure you apply antifungal products in the morning and at night—ideally after a shower or bath. Reapply the product after activities such as swimming or exercising, as it may no longer be present in amounts that would kill the fungi. If the condition fails to clear up in four weeks, stop using the product and see a physician."

I've got a red patch around my stomach side, and now itching more with brown spots? I've got some red patchy area, after a few red dots spread it, and now i've got brown spots with more itchy. I put some Lamisil cream that was recommended where it was a ringworm on that spot before. Do I have to worry? Will it go away? The brown spots are those coverings on spots after you're hurt or something.

Fluent in French replied: "Lamisil will only help if the irritation is caused by a fungus like ringworm or athletes foot. Recommend you ask your doctor. It could be a lot of things that Lamisil won't help treat."

harvbluz replied: "Have you seen any spiders walking around with a smile on their face?? I would suggest Hydrocortisone cream. (Is that what Lamisil is??) Other than that, a Dr visit may be in order, just so you know what it is..."

Can you use OTC Lamisil on cats? My kitty has a small ringworm patch and I was wondering if it is OK to use over the counter Lamisil cream/ointment to treat him with, as long as we make sure he doesn't lick it off? Are OTC human Lamisil or Clotrimazole products too strong for cats' skin, or are they similar to the ones sold by Pet Meds and such, therefore alright to use on cats' skin? Anyone have any personal experience doing so? Thanks! I realize these questions are best answered by a vet, but I was just wondering if anyone else out there had similar experiences or already had an answer since I haven't been able to get away from work to take him to the vet yet today. We will obviously do so as soon as I can, I'm not trying to shirk away from taking him to the vet, but in the meantime, was hoping for some help today while I'm worrying about him. Thanks.

jum4321 replied: "This should only be answered by a vet."

catloverme123 replied: "you need to get your cat to the vet and have it properly diagnosed and given proper treatment with knowledge of exactly what to give, how much to give and how often."

J C replied: "Yes, Lamisil is often used to treat ringworm. Your vet will prescribe a clotrimazole cream, which is the main ingredient in lamisil. Just apply a thin film twice a day until you can get him in to the vet."
