the drug given uti sulfamethoxazole? on the symptoms it said could cause kidney stones if not enough fluids are drank is this true i just took my first pill after going to the doctors cause i got a uti anyone got suggestions?

nobodyinparticular replied: "Yes, it is true that sulfamethoxazole can cause crystals to form in the urinary tract. This hardly ever happens, though, because most pharmacists will put a sticker on the prescription bottle advising fluid intake. And even if they didn't, doctors tell you that when you have a urinary tract infection, whether they give you sulfamethoxazole or something else. So you don't need to worry about it; you just need to drink extra fluids."

My doctor prescribed me Sulfamethoxazole & I'm allergic to penicillin? I have been seeing this doctor for 5 years now and he prescribed me Sulfa drug even-though in my medical record I am allergic to penicillin. A few hours after taking the first pill, I was coming down with fever and chill all over my body, eye pain with bloodshot, lips numb, headache, stiff neck. It has been 3 days now I am still not feeling well. I am very worry if this will have long term damage to my body. Should the doctor pay for the mistake he made?

happydawg replied: "He didnt make a mistake."

Gumball360 replied: "Sulfamethoxazole is a sulfa-based antibiotic drug, but it's not the same as penicillin. Having an allergy to penicillin won't automatically make you allergic to sulfamethoxazole. It's not the doctor's fault."

Is Bactrim a dangerous drug? Bactrim "sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim". What kind of drug is it actually? Is it an antibiotic? Or does it just aid in the use of antibiotics? It seems like it has a lot of side-effects that are unpredictable and potentially harmful. For an intestinal infection that is usually treated with Flagyl (metronidazole), is the addition of Bactrim really necessary or safe?

Donna B replied: "It's an antibiotic, and you are talking about 2 totally diferrent types of antibiotics that work in entirely diferrent ways. It's been around for a long ,time.. All medication can cause side effects ."

Would it be bad to drink alcohol while on Sulfamethoxazole/TMP DS which was prescribed to me for ance?? The last time i took the tab for acne was around 11 30 pm last night and i plan on drinking alcohol tonight around 8ish pm. I can't really find much online about interactions caused by Sulfamethoxazole and alcohol. But even if it could cause bad effects, would the drug be out of my system by tonight anyways? im only looking to have maybe 3 or 4 beers '

Eleanor Roosevelt replied: "go ahead and kick back a couple of beers. how can you have a good time if you aren't drunk."

paintballer6575 replied: "Your probably ok, but ask a doctor. How often do you take the drug? If it is daily, it should be out of your system by now, but I'm not a doctor, so I'm not sure."

Sam F replied: "I can tell you that the drug is not out of your system after eight hours. My recommendation would be not to drink but if you absolutely have to just spread out your alcohol consumption in a long period of time. Drink a beer wait a while and see how you feel. You know your body, so if you feel different then you normally do after one beer, stop."

S H replied: "I myself would only drink maybe 1 or 2 drinks and make them light ones. Drink lots of water in the meantime to flush your system out before drinking. Some meds can cause fatalities when mixed with even the smallest amount of alcohol. If you can call your local pharmacy now and ask them the same question you asked here and see what they say. They should have the correct answer to your problem."

Pearl N replied: "I wouldn't it could interfer with the medication and as far as I'm concerned getting rid of acne should be worth giving up alcohol for a few weeks. Maybe the alcohol is causing the acne. One other thing you could get a brutal belly ache by mixing a sulpha med with alcohol I wouldn't try it."

enn replied: "Oh jeepers, sacrifice the possibilty of a bad reaction to a drug for a couple of beers?????? Why is it so important to drink beer???? Why not have a Coca-Cola, stay sober, and remember everything without puking the next day? Here's an idea - why not assume that yes you will have a bad reaction if drinking alcohol while taking your prescription, stay clean and sober, behave like a decent human being, carry yourself with more self-respect, and learn how to have a good time without getting drunk? It's worked for me, and my brother, and my sister, and my other sister, and my other three brothers, and my other two sisters, and my mom, and my aunts and uncles, and my husband, and a lot of my friends, and the kids in my church youth group, and hopefully my daughter."

Bladder Infection during pregnancy and what to do? Hi there I am 26 weeks pregnant and have had a bladder infection the whole time. Nothing seems to get rid of it and the dr in the emerge prescribed me a drug called Sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim... i read up on it and its not safe for baby! SO I am going back to the drs to get a diff prescription! I am worried that it has turned into a kidney infection and I feel bad for my poor baby because I have been sick now for 26 weeks... I just started taking some walmart cranberry pills and drinking TONS of water... any other suggestions?

mommy replied: "oh, that is not good. I had two bladder infections this pregnancy. It was a big deal because bladder infections can cause premature labour. I took a perscription adn don't remember what it was! Sorry:( Anyway, it worked, but killed some of the 'good bacteria'. Then I had to take creams for a yeast infection. I am overdue by one day now. Baby is fine and all, but I did have two this pregnancy. They are not fun and mine were quite painful"

janeannpat replied: "I'm sure you've probably taken Batrim and Macrobid. Neither one of those antibiotics ever worked for me. I seem to think that I took Cipro with a horrible bladder infection with my second pregnancy, but I can't be positive because it was a few years ago. If given the choice (and if it's safe for baby) I would definitely ask for Cipro."

BeThAnY replied: "I have had a bladder infection also for almost my entire pregnancy. I was on one antibiotic (can't remember the first one) and it didn't go away so then my dr put me on Keflex 500 mg and it is almost gone, but now I am on Bactrin so hopefully that will clear it up. Was it your obgyn that prescribed that med?"

kacekay replied: "Drink cranberry juice and lots and lots of water to help clear this up.... when I say lots of water I mean like constantly so you keep peeing because that bad bacteria can multiply like every 20 minutes.... It will get better... take Tylenol for the pain wipe front to back ... I know what you are going through because I am prone to bladder infections.. it the doctor prescribes an antibiotic make sure to eat yogart everyday while taking because an antibiotic may kill off all that good bacteria down there and give you a bad yeast infection... I know that form experience.. and it may be the worst one you have ever had... Good Luck.."

Lori replied: "Ok, here is the deal. You are taking generic Bactrim DS. Did your doctor culture your urine ?( he would have almost has to) If he did,the lab would have done a sensitivity which tests for what antibiotics your infection will be susceptible to. Not just any antiobiotics work on UTI's. Your doctor only has a few choices of antibiotics that will work. You are far enough along to where it shouldn't hurt the baby. It is far more dangerous to try to treat a kidney/bladder/UTI infection with water and cranberry. Those types of infections can have serious complications during pregnancy, the most serious being pre term labor. So the benefits more than likely outweigh the risks. Call your doctor so that he can explain his reasoning for using this particular antibiotic. There are only a few out there that don't cross the placenta and they aren't indicated for UTI's in pregnancy. Your OB should be able to explain to you that you are far enough along for there to be minimal if any risk. P.S *** Someone suggested Cipro. It is the last choice in pregnancy. I will almost bet you that the only one your infection is susceptible ( will respond to ) is Bactrim since you have had this for 26 wks. Have you seen a urologist ?"

Yarro Pilz replied: "You were prescribed the generic of Bactrim or Septra. Here's the label information: "Pregnancy Category C. In rats, oral doses of 533 mg/kg sulfamethoxazole or 200 mg/kg trimethoprim produced teratological effects manifested mainly as cleft palates. The highest dose which did not cause cleft palates in rats was 512 mg/kg sulfamethoxazole or 192 mg/kg trimethoprim when administered separately. In two studies in rats, no teratology was observed when 512 mg/kg of sulfamethoxazole was used in combination with 128 mg/kg of trimethoprim. In one study, however, cleft palates were observed in one litter out of 9 when 355 mg/kg of sulfamethoxazole was used in combination with 88 mg/kg of trimethoprim. In some rabbit studies, an overall increase in fetal loss (dead and resorbed and malformed conceptuses) was associated with doses of trimethoprim six times the human therapeutic dose. While there are no large, well-controlled studies on the use of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole in pregnant women, Brumfitt and Pursell, 5 in a retrospective study, reported the outcome of 186 pregnancies during which the mother received either placebo or oral trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole. The incidence of congenital abnormalities was 4.5% (3 of 66) in those who received placebo and 3.3% (4 of 120) in those receiving trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole. There were no abnormalities in the 10 children whose mothers received the drug during the first trimester. In a separate survey, Brumfitt and Pursell also found no congenital abnormalities in 35 children whose mothers had received oral trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole at the time of conception or shortly thereafter. Because trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole may interfere with folic acid metabolism, Bactrim IV Infusion should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus." Has the same doctor been caring for you your entire pregnancy? If so, he/she may have decided that the risk to you, due to kidney scarring, etc., outweighs the risk to the baby of the drug. Your kidneys are already working overtime, filtering your blood for both of you. And an untreated kidney infection can easily cause permanent damage. Call your doctor's office and explain your concerns. But don't be surprised if they recommend that you finish out the course of Bactrim. Cranberry juice and water are both good for UTIs, so you're taking care of yourself there. For what it's worth, both of my kids have a condition where the one-way valve between their kidneys and their bladders doesn't function as a one-way valve, which allows bacteria to build up and causes UTIs. They've been taking a small dose of Bactrim every day since their conditions were diagnosed. Which, in the case of my younger daughter, was when she was about a month old. I know that doesn't make you feel better about exposing your baby in utero, but your kidneys are really, really important."

thejezowskis replied: "I have to second what Lori said - Cipro should be a last resort. They wouldn't have given it to you if they didn't think it was going to work. I'll bet they're going to tell you to take it anyhow because it will do a better job of clearing up your infection. Other than following doctor's orders, all you can do is drink lots of water to flush out the bacteria (and eat yogurt about half an hour before taking your Bactrim because it will help replenish the good bacteria you need to digest food that the meds kill off) and drink plenty of Cranberry juice as it is the only safe thing to use for the pain/discomfort if you have any. Contrary to popular belief, I recently found out it won't help get rid of the infection but rather fight off the pain and once it's cleared up it will help keep the bacteria that cause the bladder infections from sticking to the inside of your bladder if you drink it on a regular basis in the future to help prevent them. Not sure if the pills work as well for it - you should ask your OB about it. If this round doesn't treat it then ask to see a specialist before it causes more problems for you. Best of luck and I hope you shake that darn infection this time!"

sulfamethoxazole and ttc? Me and hubby are ttc number two. We had a miscarriage in august 09 which scared us to become pregnant again, even tho we had no problems with our first child. I was seen by my obgyn to have a pap smear and she said it looks like i have a uti.She gave me sulfamethoxazole ; 14 pills total. I've taken 5 already not even thinking to read into it completely. I have read that it is not safe for pregnancy , to avoid it if you are pregnant or may become pregnant. I have called the pharmacy and they said it is not safe in the third trimester. And she asked me to call my obgyn - which I can't do until monday. Any one know anything about this drug? Or what I should do? I'm scared if I am pregnant the 5 pills I took have already done damage.

nopottytalk replied: "Google it. If it is only a problem in the 3rd trimester, that means you are fine to ttc. But you may have to make plans to get of or switch meds before the 3rd trimester. A lot of times they say that when the information is controversial and it may be fine anyway to stay on the med in the 3rd trimester. I am currently on a med that has the same warning and the obgyn didn't think it was a big deal even then, but said he would have to go back and read the papers. The medication that I'm on is called sulfasazaline, I wonder if it is the sulfa that is a problem in the 3rd trimester."

can erithromyacin replace sulfamethoxazole/tmp for bacterial infection? knowledgable answers only, please? my daughter was prescribed sulfamethoxazole/tmp for what her doctor said was drainage for a cough that had gotten into her lungs and caused her lymph node under her arm pit to swell. The swelling has gone down and was told that once the cough went away, the swelling should too. After reading all the adverse reactions caused by the sulfamethoxazole and the fact that she's had seizures in the past, I am very opposed to giving her the prescription. The doctor also has given her an inhaler that I don't know what it contains, but is a yellow/orange case with med that is inserted, then pumped into her lungs. She was told that it would help with the cough, loosening any mucus that she could spit out. When talking with the pharmacist, she wasn't much help when it came to answering my questions or concerns. I would appreciate all comments on this drug, thanks

brother3 replied: "without knowing your daughter medical his try;age, pass illness, detail present illness,is hard to give you helpfull answer. But general speaking;there are no contraindication to use bactrim ds fo patient has pass histry of seizure disorder.Bactrim is indicate for urinary tract infection, bronchitis, and ear infection. If her doctor think she has post nasal dripping due to sinusitis and also bronchitis, but hardly to explain why has swelling node in her arm pit.............which medicines is better? Erythromycin or bactrim is depend to the diagnosis. All medicines has side effects, but don't let those adverse reaction scare you,let doctor make the decision."

amandarez73 replied: "If you have all these questions, why don't you ask the doctor? I am sure he would be happy to explain why he chose that medication for her (one guess would be that erithromyacin has a higher resistance rate). You should never feel that you cannot ask your doctor questions - that is what they are there for."

Has any one taken SULFAMETHOXAZOLE/TMP DS for acne? I was perscribed SULFAMETHOXAZOLE/TMP DS for acne and have been hesitant to take it. I looked up the drug onlin and I cant find anything that says it is for treating acne. The doctor who perscribed it was sorta strange he also perscribed me 90 VALUIM a month for 6 months for a rash on my legs and also said I can take it to relax...mind you I just went in because I had developed blister like bumps that were itchy. I had went to the emergency room and they believed it was scabies (I had just stayed in a hotel, apparently a common source of contracting scabies). I did what I was perscribed by the ER but it didnt go away. When I went to this doctor he prscribd me all this stuff and didnt really hav an answer for the rash...so I just am weary of what he gave me. When I looked up this medicine and didnt see it having anything to do with acne...my concern grew considerably. So here I am...Anyone have any expriance with this stuff. Hav you taken it to treat acne and would you consider it to appropriately treat mild acne. Also what where the results like....as in how long before you noticed any changes and what side effects were experianced if any. A concern of mine was the side effects mentioned, the yellow skin/eyes mostly. PLEASE HELP :-)

Alex replied: "My doctor just prescribed me this shit for acne, God I hope it works"
