Is shedding a side effect of prednisone in dogs? My 10 mo. old puppy has an ear infection and the vet prescribed her prednisone to reduce inflammation. Since she has been taking the medication (1wk.) she has been shedding like never before. Is this a common side effect and is it anything to worry about?

walkinglady replied: "I had a dog who needed to be on prednisone for almost a year. Shedding was very definitely not a side affect - a large weight gain was. If your puppy's shedding, it's because it's spring - one of the 2 times of year dogs shed."

heart o' gold replied: "A general search didn't come up with anything obvious on a connection between prednisone and shedding. Obviously your dog is on prednisone for a reason, and whatever that condition is may be causing physical or psychological stress for the dog, which could be causing the shedding. Also, if spring has sprung where you are like it has here with substantially warmer temps, that could be causing shedding to be much more noticable. If you are really concerned, I would call your vet tomorrow as they are familiar with your dogs condition and background."

Goldengal replied: "Hi! I really don't think it is the prednisone at all. If she had been on it for long term when I'd say only maybe. What your probably seeing is your pup shedding it's puppy coat to have its adolescent coat come in. Most pups at this age do shed their puppy coats if not sooner. Also it is getting into spring and summer so that will also cause any dog to shed. I don't think you anything to worry about just keep brushing your pup to get rid of all the loose fur. Have a great Easter! :)"

untilyoucamealong04 replied: "I've asked my vet about shedding because our dog sheds a lot and they said it was because of human food. Which is true, because we do feed our dog a lot of scraps from the table. Good luck!"

katie d replied: "Prednisone itself doesn't cause shedding or hair losss but the condition your animal has that causes him to take prednisone may be the reason he is losing hair.check with your vet."

How serious is bloody stool as a side effect from prednisone? It is being taken for poison ivy, on day 7, beginning to wean off of it today, and has had bloody stools for 2 days.

Jamie B replied: "Anytime there is blood in your stool it is something to worry about. I would contact your doctor right away and discuss your symptoms. It might not have anything to do with the prednisone. I have never heard of prednisone to affect someone like that. Please contact your doctor. Feel better soon."

Is there a way to curb the "mooning" side effect of Prednisone? Mooning is the rounding of the face. It's a separate side effect, not caused by weight gain, so diet won't help it.

Jazzy replied: "I don't think so everyone I know that has taken this drug has had moon face. I did when I was on it I know its embarrasing but the drug does wonders. I have lupus and I have to take it hopefully you don't have to take long term because it can damage other organs in your body with long term use"

Is clouded vision a common side effect of prednisone eye drops? Brand name "Pred forte"? I have been diagnosed with bilateral uveitis and have been prescribed pred forte to take every 4 hours. The drops however have clouded my eyes alot and I'm just wondering if that's the natural progression of how they work.

TweetyBird replied: "Pred Forte has many adverse effects and they are all uncommon. Changes in visual acuity (sharpness) is one of the adverse effects. Contact your prescriber and describe this to her/him. See what she/he says about it."

TJ replied: "Clouded vision is not a common side effect of Predforte eye drops. But clouded vision is a common symptom of uveitis. I get recurrent uveitis. When I start with Predforte, I start at a drop per hour, a level that is maintained for several weeks before tapering down. So by my experience, your dosage seems low. I suppose it is quite possible that the T-cell levels in your eyes has continued to go up. Regardless, you should immediately contact your ophthamologist's office regarding this clouding of your vision. I expect they will want to see you immediately. Good luck with it. TJ"

Prednisone side effect question? I was prescribed Prednisone to clear up an allergy due to penicillin. The thing is that i had been taking penicillin to fight infection because I just had my wisdom teeth removed. My 1st question is to know whether the extraction sites will heal fast. My 2nd question is that I have been having these strange side effect since i started taking Prednisone. I feel like i have something stuck in my oesophagus (like food or air) and it is very annoying. Any ideas what it could be?

daweeney replied: "Prednisone is known to slow healing, however if it's being used to combat an allergic reaction, you have to weigh the pros & cons. Obviously preventing anaphylaxis or treating a reaction is more important. If you still had several more doses of the Penicillin, someone should have put you on another antibiotic. The feeling in your throat, you need to call your doctor. Prednisone doesn't do that. What kind of reaction did you have to the PCN?"

ragincajun87123 replied: "doctors dont know what theyre doing half the time.... go see a alternative medicine doc they will cure you promise! those western meds are no good!"

suzi q replied: "The prednisone should be a short-term prescription for allergic reactions. Hopefully you have also been prescribed something else for the infection itself. Their is another condition that I can't remember how to spell(olitis?) that causes that sensation in your throat. It could just be a coincidence that it started at the same time you were being treated with prednisone, kinda like Murphy's Law:). I hope you start feeling better soon."

blazergirlblazergirl replied: "If you are still taking the PCN this may be causing the feeling in your throat. The prednisone can be prescribed for about a week to counteract an allergic reaction, but if you are still taking the pcn then your body may be trying to have a reaction and the prednisone is keeping it from happening. The pcn needed to be stopped immediately when you had the reaction. These reactions can be severe and even deadly. It isn't something you take lightly. If you are still taking the pcn then please stop. The dentist usually give patients an antibiotic for prevention and they don't actually have an infection."

Anj replied: "firstly, if you take prednisone for a short period, you should not expereince any side effects. Over the long term however side effects may include weight gain, going to the loo more frequently and pimples! I took prednisone for 10 years and I had all these side effects. The thing in your throat has nothing to do with prednisone - you should go see your doctor."

How long will the prednisone side effects last? I just finished a dose of prednisone where I was to take 3, 50mg tablets for 4 days. The side effects are really discomforting and I was wondering if anyone knows how many days it will take for the effects to wear off.

sokokl replied: "It could take a few days for the side effects of the prednisone to wear off, but I would recommend checking with your doctor as well to see what they say."

Amir S replied: "OK last year i had an asthma attack. and was hospitalize for 6 days. each day i had to take this disgusting medicine called prednisone. each day the doctor came in and said :ready for your medicine" and when i finally got of the prednisone the doctor said it should wear of in about four days. and my doctor told me to drink plenty of water. that will speed the process of getting ride of the prednisone in you. i hope this information helps you."

Prednisone skin thinning is more of a side effect on what dose of it? On what dose (how many mg) of prednisone daily, should skin thinning become more of a side effect to worry about ?

greydoc6 replied: "Skin thinning is more a concern with topical steroid creams and ointments, especially the more potent ones. It is a factor of length of time of application, frequency of application and strength of the topical medication. Skin thinning can be an effect of orally administered steroids, too, and again dosage, strength of preparation and length of time one takes the medication factor in the development of side effects. Dosage alone is not the determining factor."

Side effects of prednisone treatment on my dog? My 9 month old Corgi is taking prednisone for his masticatory muscle myositis. He takes 20 mgs every twelve hours. He's been on it for about a week now. His mouth seems less painfull for him, so I think the treatment is working. I know the common side effects, such as panting, drinking alot and urinating alot. But what about other side effects? Such as the attitude and behavior changes my dog will go though.

River Hermit replied: "Hello..if he's been on them a week & you haven't noticed any behavorial...etc changes, might be for him they are none...otherwise you should ask your vet or it might be on a care sheet of some sort, beings it's a steroid !! Take Care :)"

DP replied: "Side Effects Side effects seen in dogs include polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia, poor haircoat, GI disturbance, diarrhea, vomiting, weight gain, GI ulceration, pancreatitis, lipidemia, elevated liver enzymes, diabetes mellitus, muscle wasting, and possible behavioral changes. Polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia may be seen in dogs even on short-term therapy. Corticosteroids can cause or worsen gastric ulcers. Precautions • Chronic or inappropriate use of corticosteroids, including prednisone, can cause life threatening hormonal and metabolic changes. • Adverse effects due to corticosteroid treatment usually occur with long-term administration of the drug, especially when high doses are used. Alternate day therapy with short acting preparations is preferred. Animals who have received long-term therapy should be withdrawn slowly by tapering the dosage and prolonging the interval between doses. • Corticosteroids suppress immune response. Animals receiving systemic corticosteroids may be more susceptible to bacterial or viral infections. Systemic corticosteroids can mask signs of infection, such as an elevated temperature. • Systemic corticosteroids are contraindicated in patients with systemic fungal infections. (The treatment of Addison's disease may be considered an exception.) • Prednisone must be converted to prednisolone in the liver. Animals in hepatic failure should receive prednisolone rather than prednisone. • Corticosteroids should be avoided or used very carefully in young animals both because of immune suppression and the risk of GI ulcers."

tinkerbellnjk replied: "Prednisone is a steroid. I've never had a pet that took it, but my brother does. I would assume it would have kind of the same side effects. Weight gain, Moody-ness, loss of appetite."

Big red replied: "DP hit the nail on the head."

~beagleluvr~ replied: "my beagle was on that and i noticed that she wasn't as lively and just not herself.. she was taking 10mg every other day. i took her off of it and she has perked up, back like she was. this was for allergies. but i'm going another route with that and it seems to be working."

How long does it take for the side effects of prednisone (steriod) to wear off in a dog? Hi, We have a German Shepherd Dog who has been prescibed prednisone for an inflamatory condition. Throughout the Course of the drugs he has been unable to stop urinating (i.e. dripping constantly). He finished the course of drugs Sunday and there has been no change in the side effects. Has anyone had a similar experience? How long did the side effects last after you finished the drugs. We're worried he's been permanently damaged. Thanks for any advice...

debbigilbert@sbcglobal.net replied: "it takes about 2 weeks to see the frequent urination diminish."

deltadawn replied: "Was he WEANED off prednisone gradually,... as he should have been gradually dosed on? Pred. does stay in system for awhile. 1 of the side affects is lots of thirst,.. which prob. contributed to his frequent peeing. There is a course of dosage for meds. like Pred. which is gradual increase of dose at onset of giving and then a decrease of weaning off period. Otherwise dangerous. Approx. a 5-7 days before pred. side affects should subside. Hope this helps. Gd. luck."

Iggy replied: "Just it does humans, same side effects, they use the bathroom alot, it is cleansing the system, by making the dog or person tinkle alot...it will take about 10 days for it to wear off, don't worry, each day the dog will start to taper back on the peeing...be patient...this is normal"

Allo! replied: "my dog is currently being weaned off the pred. i hope your dog was too. he's on 80mg a day for 5 days, 40 mg for 5 days and now we're doing 40mg every other day until it's gone. he's peeing like crazy too, and soooo thirsty. and he's a bit googly-eyed. i can tell already though, that it's a little bit less intense than it was when he first started, and i'm guessing that in a week or so after we stop it all together he'll be ok. you should give your dog at least a week to come 'down' before you get concerned. i was put on prednisone last summer for kidney problems, and i had the same problem as the dogs do! it's no fun!"

john n replied: "my husky has been on prednisone through out the summer months for a few years,he has seasonal allergies and breaks out in raw sores and hot spots where he is so miserable that he is feverish and itchy until the drugs kick in.did u wean him off slowly? with bear he starts out with 3 pills a day for 3 days then cut down to 2 then 1. after a week he is off the drugs until the next out break which is a few weeks later or if he happens to get into wet grass or pollen. sometimes the cause is air boure until the weather gets cool and he does not walk or run in the fields.give ur dog benadryl every day also to help his condition.they pee a lot and do have a hard time controlling their bladders along with hunger.make sure u try the meds for a few days and wean him off to make sure he is not getting to much.he will get control again but the side effects can be infection in their prostate when they take the drug continually.if he is itchy give him benadryl 2 x a day and rub him down with medicated oatmeal dog conditioner on the raw spots.call ur vet if he continues dripping in a few days just in case of a urinary infection.it is a good drug to help with allergies but like most drugs the side effects suck. i hope this info helps a little"

How long do the side effects of prednisone last once you have stopped the medication? I was prescribed prednisone after getting an allergic reaction to peanuts. I was to take this medication in a mild dosage twice a day for 5 days. I have completed my dose, but I'm still experiencing nausea, abdominal pain, shakes, migraines, dizziness, weakness, and mood swings two days after completing the dose. Does anybody know how long these side effects last? and is it normal? No, the doctor did not tell me to taper this medication off because it is a mild dose.

Kiara replied: "I believe that it can stay in your system for a couple of days after and up to a week at the worst I am not positive, but I think that is how long it is in your system."

beernotcider replied: "The side effects from prednisone are many and varied, but should go away in about a week after stopping the meds. By the way , did your doctor notrecommend a tapering-off the prednisone ?"

Christy replied: "Most medicines stay in your system anywhere between a couple of days to a couple of weeks after you take them. Im assuming that because the medicine was kinda "instant" relief it wont take a couple of weeks. *by instant I mean you dont take it for weeks before it helps."
