Propranolol And Weight Gain Information in Questions
does propranolol cause weight gain and or cravings? cus i started it a week ago and ive been really hungry and eating alot lol

giggles replied: "nope ur pregnant"

SZO replied: "Propranolol is associated with a modest weight gain during the first few months of treatment."

Does Propranolol make you gain weight? Ive just been prescribed Propranolol by my doctor and read that some people have put on weight has anyone else had this problem whilst taking the drug?

lola replied: "I'm currently taking this med..but it makes my head hurt....haven't gained any weight...but i just started..let me know what you find out...and I'll keep ya posted on my findings"

Dr Frank replied: "Propranoll certainly does not directly cause weight gain, this is not a side effect of beta-blockers. However it is an older, non-selective drug and makes some people tired and sluggish, I suppose this could indirectly lead to weight gain."

I am going to start taking propranolol for migranes.I do not want to gain weight...? I will be taking up to 60mg a day (starting at 40. taking pill 2 then 3 times a day). One thing I do not want, as I am sure many don't, is a weight gain. I recently lost some and am trying hard to lose a few more and keep it off. For those who have been on it, can you tell me your experience with it? Thanks!

bsktsk8ter9 replied: "hmmm exercise? i wonder why people try and lose weight but dont want to exercise; just rather sit around and not eat."

Deannie replied: "If you are afraid of taking propranolol ,because of gaining weight. Why don't you try a alternitive medication. Some people I know taking that medication gain a few extra pounds."

knicname replied: "Propranolol (Inderal), a beta blocker does not cause weight gain...a side effect is actually loss of appetite. EDIT: I know several people who have taken it & none gained weight, but one became depressed."

SZO replied: "Weight gain can occur as a side effect of some beta blockers, especially the older ones, such as atenolol (Tenormin) and metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol-XL). The average weight gain is between 2 and 4 pounds (0.9 and 1.8 kilograms). Newer beta blockers, such as carvedilol (Coreg) and nebivolol (Bystolic), are not associated with weight gain. Ask your doctor if it is possible to switch on the latter types."

Gained weight on propranolol, lexapro, and implanon? I Have been on these meds for about 2 years, with the exception of lexapro which has been for 6 minus the time i was pregnant with my 3 kids. After I have lost the weight after my 3rd pregnancy, i got back on lexapro, and now implanon for birth control, and propranolol for headaches, and i have gained the 35 lbs back. So i am at the weight i am now, which i was back when i gave birth. Is this normal?

Lisa V replied: "you need to check with your doctor about which one would be causing weight gain/retention. i have an implanon implant, and now you have me thnking that maybe thats the reason i cant shift my weight! lol"

Does anyone now if Paroxetine are weight gaining? I was 11 stone 3lbs, when starting to take paroxetine but over a the past three months being on the tablets I'm eating really healthy and walking my dogs 3 times aday (which hasnt gone to muscle) I've checked the scales. But this morning I'm weighing 12 stone 11lbs, which is really upsetting me as I'm trying really hard to lose the weight and each week i put more on. I am on the tablets for depression, i also take propranolol 80mg a day too. Can anyone help as its really upsetting as i'm trying really hard each week to lose weight and keep putting on. I never eat any processed food, as i dont like it, i dont eat any cabs after 5pm too. My dose per day is Paroxetine 30mg Propranolol 80 mg Daily

rodolfo l replied: "It's better to consult your Doctor before it's not late."

Bob P replied: "It is guilty of many things but not weight gain! I think you answered your own question, if you look hard."

shushin replied: "I cannot see that they cause weight gain. "

purkat67 replied: "unfortunately depression medications are notorious for weight gain. It is listed as a side effect if the medicine is known to. You Need to talk to your doctor about this. Next it is difficult but if you radically reduce processed foods from your diet, you may be able to stem the tide. this includes gum and many foods with dye in it. Best of luck in this journey of your life"

john alasdair replied: "I'm afraid that these SSRIs are linked to weight gain: ++weight+gain&btnG=Search I would consider consulting your psychiatrist (or whoever prescribed those drugs), because there are probably counter measures or other drugs that would have a less adverse effect. DO NOT take any diet drugs etc. without checking first how they will work with your really important drugs. It is better to have some weight and to be well balanced, than to be thin and unbalanced."

Borderline_Babe replied: "Why the feck is Seroxat still being prescribed...?! It is the most EVIL AD in existence! What's your dosage? I can tell you categorically that weight-gain is NOT a listed side-effect (though I gained weight because it made me so fecking dopey and suicidal that I lost the urge to exercise AT ALL!! Thankfully it's not done that to you - yet!) 'Gastro-intestinal disturbance' is a listed side-effect of propranolol, however, maybe that's the problem. I would ask to be taken off Seroxat, PDQ; it's one of the new line of SSRIs and, if you're fairly young, it can lead to anxiety, suicidal ideation, depersonalisation and even completed suicide. It is NOT A NICE THING TO BE TAKING AT ALL!! Go back to your GP - now!! But thank you for using its generic name (even though it's obvious you're in the UK) as it's known as Paxil, IIRC, in North America. I will reiterate: - I know a little about most SSRIs/MAOIs but I NEED to know the GENERIC name (NOT the brand name) as different countries call drugs by different names (e.g. escitalopram is known as cipramil over here, but cipralex in the US)."

I want to stop takin these Beta Blockers- Propranolol? I've been precrobed them to see if they work for these head pains. I'm only 14 though. But there's too many side effects. n i'm particulary weary about the 'Hair Loss' & he possible 'Weight Gain' I mean, the pains are unbearable, but my peadiatrician, after 9 months has only just realised my head was Shooting pains NOT HEADACHES!?! anyway.. i've been takin these for 3 days now. i want to stop though. I'm sick of feeling tired all the time! I'm not as 'fun' anymore, i'd rather suffer with headpains, than let it effect me emotionally! haha so is it safe if i just stop them all together? It's a low dose of 20 mg, twice a day. =) prescribed*

I have Hyperthyroidism, but why am I gaining so much weight? I've been diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism for about a year now and one of the symptoms is losing weight, but mine is totally opposite. I used to weigh 90 lbs, I'm only 5'0 ft so that's kinda like the normal weight, but with Hyperthyroidism, I now weight 115 lbs. I gained about 15 lbs in six months and I have a lot of apetite to eat. I am always eating coz I feel like I never get full, one of the symptoms also. I'm taking Propranolol and PTU for my meds. But why am I gaining so much weight when I have Hyperthyroidism and not Hypo?

PonderinginOhio replied: "Thyroid issues can vary back and forth. Most people start out hyper and then wind up hypo because their thyroid dies out. I have hashimotos disease (hypo) and they said it could be because I was hyper for so (always super skinny) and my thyroid just burned out and now Im hypo. I would get rechecked!"

Samurai replied: "http://www.askapatient.com/viewrating.asp?drug=16418&name=INDERAL&sort=satisfaction&order=1 Also, one of the signs of your body being adrenaly fatigued, is weight gain. Get off of the meds. Plain and simple."

kaley replied: "there's one symptom called hashitoxicosis where you can have symptoms of hypo & hyperthyroidism at the same time...read it up..maybe it'll help..or you can ask your doctor about it.."

Grave's Disease? I have Graves Disease and had the I-131 treatment the first part of February. It seems like the treatment didn't do a very good job as my thyroid went from being 30 grams to 20 grams. Plus my levels are really high. Anyone have any helpful hints on getting through this? I am on propranolol for my heart and xanax for anxiety. Weight gain stinks, I just have no energy and life is no fun!! Any helpful tips or what not be awesome.

CCC replied: "my fav healthsite is a compilation of all the best sites on the net at see graves disease. pres bush mom has it."

DizziDazi replied: "Have you considered a thyroidectomy. You would have to be on some sort of replacement therapy like synthroid for the rest of your life, but it is not too terribly expensive and would solve your problem."

Samm replied: "Sorry I have Hypothyroidism and am not familiar with Your type. Good Luck."

Does propranolol lead to insulin resistance? I am worried about stopping propranolol (my bp is rarely below 190/110) and GP has recently had dose increased to 120mg per day. However, my weight is out of control and I suffer badly from blood sugar problems (which means I need to eat every 3 hours or I get panicky and sweaty) I have gained almost 5 stone over 8 years - can someone out there please give me some advice. I have been tested for thyroid and diabetes which came back as normal. I do struggle with dieting but even on bad days I rarely eat more than 2000 cals. I am also on hrt following a TAH and my gp has just given me olestra with the result that I have actually gained another 2lbs despite eating only 30g of fat per day. What is going on?

norbor replied: "Propranolol treatment attenuates hypermetabolism and does not cause increased incidence of infection and sepsis. Propranolol and weight: Beta Blockers can cause weight gain. Research shows that beta blockers and diuretics, the drugs prescribed most often for high blood pressure, cause high blood sugar levels, weight gain, tiredness and impotence. Most people with high blood pressure have high blood insulin levels that increase their chances of suffering heart attacks, constant hunger and weight gain. Beta blockers, such as atenolol and propranolol, and diuretics such as hydrochlorothiazide, reduce the body's ability to respond to insulin, causing high blood insulin levels that increase risk for heart attacks, diabetes and weight gain. Because of this, drug companies have developed newer beta blockers such as dilevalol, carvedilol and celiprolol that do not raise insulin levels and therefore do not increase a person's chances of suffering heart attacks, diabetes and weight gain. Insulin resistance is defined as the relative impairment of insulin to promote glucose uptake in peripheral tissues. Effect of beta-blockers and diuretics: The experience over the last 6-7 years is that betablockers and diuretics in general impair insulin resistance by about 20%. However, it has also been shown that this is not a pure class effect because among the betablockers there is a clear separation in effect between those that have intrinsic sympathetic activity (ISA) and those that do not have ISA. Thus, propranolol treatment is associated with a worsening of insulin resistance by 32%. Precautions/contraindications: Propranolol should be used with caution in patients with: •Diabetes mellitus Diabetes mellitus , often referred to simply as diabetes , is a syndrome of disordered metabolism, usually due to a combination of genetic disorder and environmental causes, resulting in abnormally high blood sugar levels ....or hyperthyroidism Hyperthyroidism Hyperthyroidism is the term for overactive tissue within the thyroid gland, resulting in overproduction and thus an excess of circulating free thyroid hormones: thyroxine , triiodothyronine , or both...., since signs and symptoms of hypoglycaemia may be masked. Also, propranolol may affect blood sugar levels Also read article on this web sites: "

crazyowl replied: "Please be aware there are a large number of people on this site telling people to try acai berry please be aware of this in the first place As far as I am aware propranolol does not lead to insulin resistance. The only thing I can suggest is try looking at the GI. This measures how quickly the carbohydrates in the food are broken down and absorbed into the blood as glucose. Some diabetics have found that be watching the GI content of food that they gain better blood glucose control and lose weight, therefore you may find that this system works for you (see the web site below for more information)"

jackie m replied: "I took them for almost 10 years for depression but didn't gain weight, although I was on off diets - I stopped taking them 4 years ago and last year was diagnosed type 2 diabetes diet controlled and an under active thyroid, 2 months ago I took Xenical Orlistat to help lose weight but after spending most of the day running to the loo I stopped taking them after a week and gained 3lb, my stomach and bowels have not been right since then. I am female 52 years old and menopausal. I don't have a big appetite and doctor told me I am not loosing weight because I don't eat enough?"

SugarBabie replied: "Beta blockers can cause insulin resistance and increase your chances of becoming diabetic. You can read about it here... If your doctor agrees that you should change your medications make sure that you are tapered off the beta blocker very slowly. Its not safe to do it too fast. I suggest you ask your doctor to test your blood sugar again. It may have changed and may now be borderline or high, even if you started out with hypoglycemia. Ask for an HbA1c test, which doesn't require fasting. It would probably be wise to get it checked every year or if its a little high, twice a year because of your other health issues and blood sugar problems. Your results should be between 3.5 and 5.5 %. If its higher, you are prediabetic, or could even have full blown diabetes. Getting panicky and sweaty are symptoms of low blood sugar, but if your blood sugar is higher than normal, you can get these symptoms as it goes down to normal. Your body gets used to the high levels and you feel terrible when it gets lower than usual. That's why you can't really be sure if its high or low just by your symptoms. You need to actually test your blood sugar levels. It would also be helpful if you got a glucometer and tested your blood sugar before breakfast and about two hours after breakfast, each day. This would give you an idea what's really happening. Your doctor can write a prescription for it, and the test strips. You can usually get the meter free when you buy 100 test strips (costs from $60 to $100 for a box of 100). If you see your blood sugar rising higher than normal levels after meals, then you need to make changes to your diet. You can start by cutting back on processed foods and carbs. Try the South Beach diet, phase two, it should help with hypoglycemia and it certainly helps with diabetes. Either way, talk to your doctor about all this before making changes. Good luck! PS. I recommend the Freestyle Freedom meter because it requires only a tiny blood sample and its very easy to use. You can see it here..."
