Is it possible to feel the positive effects of Wellbutrin after only 1 hour? I have tried multiple anti-depressants, and was given Wellbutrin yesterday to start taking this morning, I think I feel better already..... Is this possible? Or am I just fooling myself? Can some of the effects take place this quickly? It is standard Wellbutrin, not XR or SR.

Samanthuh replied: "it isn't likely that they would be working this fast but you never know it could happen or maybe your mind is telling you that you are getting better because you were put on this medication if that makes sense best wishes:)"

~Stormy~ replied: "I would say yes...I went thru SIX different SSRI's(4-6 weeks on each one) and NONE did a thing...then one day a new Doc put me on Paxil...in FOUR DAYS I was "good" like I hadn't been in YEARS! So yeah, one hour(ya never know)..it could be possible. In fact just last night a guy was on here saying it had only been a day and he felt something too on his new antidepressant. And Wellbutrin targets two different brain chemicals than ALL the other SSRI/SNRI's out there(Dopa and Nora I believe)...so maybe you simply needed something other than just your Serotonin "tweeked" and that's why this one will work vs the others. I wanted to add this too(re Placebo Effect)...I was NOT expecting that Paxil to work for me,after SIX failed SSRI's I had all but given up that ANYTHING would work,I think it was just "luck" that I even filled that script that day, fully thinking it was a total waste of time/money. So,I'm going to make a "stretch" here and GUESS,that maybe you felt the same, did NOT expect this to work(since you mentioned other failed attempts as well),so if that's the case(?)...then it couldn't possibly be a "placebo-effect"....you can just FEEL/KNOW when you finally get that "right one",so if you think you did, don't discount that/second guess yourself:-)"

Dee replied: "I seriously doubt it. It's called the Placebo effect. You take a pill that is supposed to make you feel better, so you feel better. It needs a few days till you will feel anything."

Ben replied: "I doubt it. That is awfully quick."

catherine replied: "Initially you will feel some positive effects immediately such as better sleep patterns and a greater sense of alertness but it will take at least 2 weeks to get a correct baseline blood level that is effective."

MeAgain replied: "Yes it's possible to feel the effects, the same way it's possible to feel the effects of a pain killer in about 20 minutes or so. It's not your imagination."

meggus31 replied: "no"

itsjujubeans replied: "I took welbutrin and felt something right away. Like, as if it was acting as an upper or something. My pupils even dialated. I was an inpatient at the time and the Dr. said it was rare but there are people who feel it right away. However its supposed to take longer to get the full effect."

How long do the side effects of Wellbutrin last? I have been taking 75mg of Wellbutrin for a week. I am already feeling some positive effects but today I have been trembling quite a bit. Trembling is not on the side effects sheet my pharmacist gave me. Is this a common side effect? How long on average do the side effects last?

Erryn B replied: "Don't be afraid to go back to the pharmacist or call to get a consult. Just because a side effect isn't listed, does not mean it can't happen. Length of time of side effects varies from person to person. I was nauseous on Wellbutrin and it lasted about a week. Another drug we tried gave me numb and tingling hands and feet and a month later there was still tingling - I went off the med. Also, don't be afraid to talk to your doctor. It may be that the dosage needs to be adjusted. If that doesn't work, there are lots of other meds out there. Finally, make sure you rule out other causes. Caffeine, dietary changes and stress could all cause trembling. A dairy (including foods and meds and any side effects) can help you and your doctor trace the source of the problem. I always throw in a suggestion of nontrarditional remedies. Meditation (there are lots of CDs you can buy to help) is great for so many issues and can help you feel more in control. It probably won't eliminate the side effect, but it will can give you greater inner peace. Seek out help. Your doctor and pharmacist are your best allies. Good luck!"

Criterias replied: "I take 100mg twice daily, I've been taking successfully it for almost a year now. I have personally experienced trembling/the shakes. I asked my doc about this right away, and she has assured me that it is a side effect that should light off - & go away. Sometimes I do still feel shaky - but it's been the only thing that's helped me thus far and I feel that feeling better on daily basis out weighs the shakes/trembling. I also take xanax daily - that could make me more relaxed and subside the full effect of the trembling that most people experience. Hang in there, the first couple weeks can be VERY tough. I almost stopped taking it 4 or 5 times within the first 3 weeks of taking it, I had to be told over and over that it takes time to work/kick in. I stuck it out ( I was miserable - almost worse than I was before I started it ) and I'm now glad I did, now I feel great. -Goodluck - Email me if you have any questions ♥"

Has anyone has any positive side effects on Wellbutrin? I have recently had my medication changed from Paxil to Wellbutrin. On Paxil I was never have any energy, I stay sleepy tired, I've gained about 50lbs. My doctor switched my meds a weeks ago after she weened me off of the Paxil, that was the worst week of my life, coming of of Paxil. I've already started to feel better since taking the new meds this weeks. I just want to know if anyone has anything positive to say about Wellbutrin? I take 100mg three times a day.

Pico replied: "Oh yeah, I had a MAJOR increase in energy. I was lethargic with no motivation before. It helped tremendously with my chronic fatigue. BUT, it caused a sudden outbreak of cystic acne and I had to get off Wellbutrin. Once I was off of it, the acne went away."

Wicked Bad Nonsense replied: "You might lose weight during the first stages of taking it, as it temporarily decreases appetite. Some people would call that positive. Some people find they have more energy, but others find that energy to be more like anxiety."

Elizabeth replied: "Wellbutrin was the best med I've ever taken for depression. Unfortunately, it also made my Tourette's tics go out of control, so I had to stop taking it. Most of the SSRIs did nothing for me, or just made me really irritable and tired. You shouldn't gain weight on Wellbutrin (perhaps you'll even lose what you gained), and it was great for energy for me. It works on different receptors than Paxil, so you may see a marked improvement. But since antidepressants work differently on different people, there's no way to know for sure until you try it for a month or so. Negative side effects were feeling like I'd had a little too much caffeine (always fidgeting), some trouble sleeping (I felt too awake) and dry mouth. But it did help the depression a lot. I was on the same dose as you. I recommend decreasing other stimulant intake while you're on it, especially if you smoke. Caffeine and nicotine seem to make the bad side effects much worse."

RattnRoll replied: "actually some people experience seeing things on Wellburtin."

adelaide replied: "I only took it for one month (lost my insurance and wellbutrin was pricey back then) but for that one month I had little to no side effects. I felt more motivated and had enough energy to get some house cleaning done. Yet I didn't feel moody or spacey or any of those frusterating things. I have positve feelings about wellbutrin. I don't have those low energy symptoms with my depression anymore but my ADHD and anxiety is still running rampant. I've been thinking about looking into meds again. Good luck with yours, I know how frusterating finding the right med can be!"

Can wellbutrin 150mg cause a positive drug test for cocaine? I took a drug test and it showed up positive for cocaine and i have not been around it whatsoever. Iam currently taking wellbutrin 150mg, Straterra100mg, Trazadone300mg and am curious to know if that would be effecting the drug test. Iam very concerned what could be breaking down in my body.

Leah replied: "I'm on the same dosage of Wellbutrin as you are, and I haven't experienced that problem and my doctors have never mentioned to me that it could happen. Maybe you should call your GP and ask them what could have caused it?"

noitall replied: "interesting . . . time to talk with the pharmacist"

Amanda replied: "Definitely not. None of those drugs will make you test positive for anything on a typical drug screen. I perform drug tests on others as part of my job and also have taken wellbutrin myself. The positive test isnt related. Ask to be retested, or ask to take a hair follicle test, as hair follicle screens show drug use over a longer period."

phatfarm141 replied: "It is also possible that they mixed your test up with another person's. The labs are not infallible. If you know you didn't use cocaine that seems like a real possibility. Sorry that happened to you."

bkdepa replied: "I wouldn't know why Wellbutrin would cause such a result. It does have something to do with Dopamine but other than that... I'm glad you listed the other medications you're using however. In lab tests, Monkey's were unable to distinguish between Cocaine and Straterra at low doses. Chemically they're not the same however (unlike Ritalin and some other ADD/ADHD medications I mean). I'd be more convinced it had more to do with the Straterra than any other medication you mentioned. I found this on common drug testing for Cocaine in case it's helpful... "Most drug tests that check for cocaine look for benzoylecgonine, a product of the body's metabolism of the drug. Other illegal drugs, including opium and psilocybin, do not produce this byproduct and so can't cause a false positive for cocaine. Rarely, marijuana may be laced with other substances; accidentally using cocaine in this way could make someone test positive. However, benzoylecgonine can only be detected in urine for around three days after using cocaine." Some medications and medical conditions can sometimes trigger a false positive for cocaine. These include; Amoxicillin, Topical anesthetics derived from cocaine (does not include lidocaine or novocaine), Liver disease, Kidney disease, & Diabetes."

Whats your thoughts on Wellbutrin? I was wondering how people were effcted using wellbutrin. Positive/negative effects? what side effects you may of had? Do you recommened it? What were you using it for? And if you suffered any memory loss or loss of libido/ED from using it? Please add your age, and what dosage you were on.

itsjujubeans replied: "Well I was a smoker when i started welbutrin. The drug made smoking feel like a chore and I had to actually force myself to smoke. I quit smoking. It also was like an upper for me and even made my pupils dialate. I don't recall any memory loos. My libido was fine but it did dry me up. Using it for Major depression. It was so long ago that I don't remember what it actually did to my mood."

Ashley replied: "I have only negative to say about wellbutrin. Within 2 months, I had a seizure at work (and I'm not epileptic), and had to be carried out of the store on a stretcher (attractive, right?). The memory loss I suffered was during the time of the seizure. I was using it for my depressive disorder, the paramedics told me quit it cold turkey, that Wellbutrin was the culprit. At the time, I was 19, I don't remember the dose, I turn 22 soon. And I don't remember the dosage after the slew of medication that followed it."

Paul A replied: "I take generic Wellbutrin SR (150 mg) in the morning, and Lexapro (10 mg) with dinner, for depression and anxiety. I've been taking that for over two years, and it's working very well for me. The Wellbutrin SR seems to help me to be more alert and active - and wanting to do things - while the Lexapro makes me more mellow, and it helps me sleep better, too. They are relatively low doses of each medication, which keeps side effects at a minimum. I really can't tell I'm taking any medication at all. There are a lot of people that take Wellbutrin with their SSRI's and SNRI's, it helps to counteract some of the possible side effects - such as drowsiness, weight gain, and the sexual side effects. It really does make a difference!!"

? replied: "You could try viagra but I will tell ya what, that stuff sucks. The side effects are terrible. Have you ever tried a sexual enhancer? I was in your situation, like I said, viagra was tried but it wasn't for me considering the side effects overwhelm the pleasures of it. I found this natural herbal enhancer and figured what the heck, if it's natural it must be great and plus it said no side effects. I tried it and after about two days of taking it I was just horny like a mad man. All the time, I have erections that want to stand straight up and the orgasms are to die for. The stuff was called vigrx plus and I saved on it at the time at hughs-reviews.com , You should check it out. I love the fact it's made from a researched blend of herbs that seem to do the trick for me atleast. Good luck and I hope this helps."

Do effects of prozac diminish after several weeks of positive results? I have suffered from depression all my life. I've taken various medications on and off and I've been on Wellbutrin for the past year. I like the results but told my doctor that I thought I could improve more. He added Prozac to my daily medication and at first - especially the first week - I felt more energized, alert, and motivated. It now seems to be dropping off even though I'm still taking both drugs every day. I feel like I'm still benefiting but not the same feeling I was getting. Anyone else experience this?

kevin c replied: "You may be suffering from something other than depression. I'm assuming you're seeing a psychiatrist and not a GP- (S)he should determine if you have elements of Axis-I bi-polar disorder. If so, there would be a mood-stabilizer added to your anti-depressant. This is in NO WAY a diagnosis- I'm just a computer programmer. Good luck,"

aries33 replied: "Prozac is an SSRI type of anti-depressant, read this post about effects of prozac and other anti-depressants."

What is your opinion of Wellbutrin? I'm thinking about taking Wellbutrin to help myself quit smoking. If you've ever taken Wellbutrin, would you mind sharing the side effects you experienced, and anything else very negative or positive you thought about it? Thanks a lot!

James replied: "I hated it. It made me depressed, and caused hyperphagia, a condition where you feel hungry all the time, on matter how much you have eaten. Others have taken it and had no bad effects. If you start on it and find you don't like it, taper off slowly. Stopping cold turkey is very dangerous psychologically."

alex_from_sf replied: "I think you should quit cold turkey like I did. It only takes 24 hours to get most of the nicotine out of your system. After that, its just a matter of getting out of the physical habit. It's difficult, but the longer you can go without smoking, the closer you are to freedom. I think doing that would be better than dealing with the side affects of Wellbutrin, but that's just me. My older brother takes Wellbutrin for OCD and he loves it. He's also a nutcase with really poor social skills."

Mills replied: "If your only reason for taking it is smoking cessation, I would advise against it. The reason is that along with being a nicotine receptor antagonist, it is a very effective dopamine/norephenephrine reuptake inhibitor. These properties are very useful for a wide range of other conditions, but you haven't stated any use for them. I actually took it for a while for smoking cessation and for a non-stimulant therapy for ADD. It also helped with excessive daytime drowsiness I was experiencing. I really didn't experience negative side effects except for occaisonal vivid dreams and lack of an appetite. (I actually considered these positive side effects, lol). Wellbutrin was effective for what I was using it for and I did taper off slowly as well because discontinuation syndrome can be severe. So, unless you have the conditions it's more effective for treating altogether which mostly is seasonal depression, I would try alternative approaches. Why start problems when your trying to end them?"

When can I switch from Prozac to Wellbutrin? I'm in recovery from bulimia and was put on 20 mg of Prozac once daily about 3 months ago. The side effects (insomnia, no sex drive, random suicidal thoughts that never occurred before starting the meds, nausea, weight gain) haven't dissipated. My psychiatrist doesn't listen to me when I tell her about these problems I've had with the meds, she just tells me to keep taking it and "we'll wait and see what happens." I feel lousy and tired most of the day, don't really want to be around people or do anything. The only positive thing is that my purging has decreased. I havent purged in over 2 months. I still binge like crazy though...the cravings seem to be worse with Prozac, and I don't really care that it's not actually healthy or benefiting me. I've read a lot about Wellbutrin and how it usually has fewer side effects, but my psych said it's contraindicated for eating disorder patients b/c of the seizure risk. Will I ever be able to take it since I've beaten the purges? And if so, when? Can my shrink check my electrolyte levels and stuff to make sure they're normal? My purges never occurred more than 4 times per week during the worst part of my eating disorder, and like I said, I haven't purged in quite awhile. I also take Adderall XR for ADHD which is also supposed to suppress appetite, but it never has for me. That's another reason why Wellbutrin appealed to me...I'd be happy to ditch the Adderall and let the Wellbutrin take care of both the bulimia symptoms and the ADHD since I don't really like being on lots of meds. Also, I've never been underweight (5'7", 135 lbs), so weight gain is not really a good thing in my case. The suididal ideation and insomnia are very real and never occurred before I started taking Prozac. Both my psychiatrist and my therapist have told me these things are likely related to the Prozac.

CK replied: "Well this sounds weird... Prozac is suppose to be way healthier than wellbutrin... I've never heard of those side effects with prozac... just because you read something doesn't mean you have to believe it... As someone who works with group therapies lemme tell you that I think you're not ready for the prozac to work and you're using the "side effects" as an excuse... I've also taken prozac and loved it... but switching meds can be really tricky... 1 you have to ween yourself off of the prozac first... start taking less mg each day... then only take it every other day then every three days... but you have to talk to your doctor about this... Then you need to detox the body for a week until you can take wellbutrin... switching anti depressent meds can make you feel really sick so be careful. I'm sure your doctor just wants you to stick with the prozac because it's too risky to go through the process of switching... I say stick with it... I've never heard insomnia and random suicidal thoughts from prozac that is a total myth... prozac is one of the oldest anti depressent drugs out there and I know plenty of doctors who love it because there aren't really any side effects... weight gain I've had a little but I had way more weight gain on birth control than prozac... besides isn't that a good thing? One last thing... anti depressants are not suppose to make you feel happy and cheery all the time... that's up to you and regular visits and talks with your therapist... these pills are just a little push to help you with the chemicals in your body to keep you stabalized. Good luck with everything and congrats on the 2 months!"

coldgreyash replied: "I would first of all see a new doctor - if she doesn't listen to your concerns, she is not treating you properly. That's why people go off their meds.... However, I read that welbutrin is contraindicated because it's one of those medicines that makes you not hungry.... it would probably add to your problem.... I guess that I would see a different doc and get a second opinion, but don't count on being able to try that particular med. There may be another that works better for you, though."

treegirl replied: "If you do not purge you can take wellbutrin. But if you relapse you will have to be monitored closely. I was bulimic and went on welbutrin and had a relapes where I was purging around 4 times a day and I never had a seizure. So I think you will be fine just do your best to control you urges. Oh and the wellbutrin will help with those binges."

michele replied: "The link between wellbutrin use and increased seizure risk in those with a history of eating disorders is not fully understood. Frankly, the risks likely outweigh the advantages here, particularly given your history of bulimia. Your doc is on target with his/her recommendation. Your best bet is to steer clear of wellbutrin altogether. Hang in there, ~M~"

Tell me everything you know about Wellbutrin xl My Dr just put me on wellbutrin xl, I don't have depression, it is more for low chemical levels. He thinks it might help. But regardless of why I want to know everything I can about this before I start taking it. Side effects Positive effects Cost with insurance Personal experiences

mykes_ replied: "it can make some people have thoughts of suicide."

Angela replied: "I used to take Welbutrin xl for depression. I don't know how much it costs, but with my insurance, it was like $15.00. It made me feel better, I guess but the greatest thing is that you also lose weight. It's one of the side affects because when you're taking it, it's like you just forget to eat. A bad thing about it though is that I always hadd this bad taste in my mouth. They also prescribe it to smokers to make them quit. I smoke, and everytime I smoked, it made the cigarette taste so bad. But other than that, it's not that bad."

Who me? replied: "My insurance did'nt pay for it. I didn't like it either anyway. It was given to me to stop smoking. For me, it made me feel like a zombie, gave me dry mouth and sort of shaky. I understand it takes 3-6 weeks before the full effect. I could not handle it. But everyone its different."

ESweetPea replied: "I hated it. HATED IT!!!! Wellbutrin (also known as Zyban, when used as a smoking cessation aid) is a central nervous system stimulant. That is, not an anti-depressant. It doesn't work on serotonin, dopamine, or other neurotransmitters directly. If you like smoking, caffeine, strong stimulants (like, say, cocaine...) then you'd probably like Wellbutrin. Personally, it made me crazy-sick and yes, I got super-paranoid and anxious and somewhat suicidal when my doc upped my dosage. It was bad sh!t. I mean, if it helps, whatever, but I hated it and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who has problems with stimulants or anxiety."

Sarah Jane replied: "When I was on Wellbutrin it gave me more energy than I wanted. I mean, for example, I would skip from my car into stores and things like that. However, I am Bipolar so it really kicked up my manic episodes to a kind of out of control level. Too much talking, feeling nervous, hard falling to sleep-all the typical Bipolar manic symptoms. The part I liked most about it was the weight control/loss. Wellbutrin is sort of a cousin to a well known but rarely prescribed weight loss drug called Tenuate. It really works. I had extra energy and a small appetite. I looked and felt great. I had an overall great experience with Wellbutrin and in fact I'm going to request getting back on a very low dose to help me have some energy and lose weight in addition to helping me feel a little happier. I was on the max dose which I think is around 400 mgs a day. I'm going to request a nice low dose. I recently was put on Seroquel for severe sleep problems-not sleeping for weeks at a time which is a typical, dangerous part of being Bipolar. But the Seraquel packed on the pounds really fast. I gained about 15+ pounds in less than 6 weeks. It was like "Super Size Me"! That's my experience. I would have to say over all a positive experience. It's just that I've been treated for Depression and OCD, PTSD, Panic disorder with Agoraphobia and other Disorders for so many years I tend to top out on the max dosage and the medication is no longer effective. So, I had to change over to something else. Right now it's Zoloft as my main anti-depressant. Plus 4 other medications for multi symptom relief and balance. Just start at a low dose and work up slowly if you need to do so. It all really depends on what all of your symptoms are and reactions to certain medications can be different for every indiviual. Of course, go over everything that concerns you with your Doctor. Be careful and report anything you feel is unusual for you right away. Also, calling a Pharmacist can really be helpful. And always think "Safety First". Wellbutrin is a strong drug and if you feel strange in any way that scares you go to the ER right away. Make sure a friend or family member knows you are trying something new so they can tell you if they notice anything you might not be able to see for yourself. I don't know about individual insurance plans but I would imagine if your doctor feels this drug is right for you, your Insurance should have you covered. If they won't, ask your doctor what to do. Make yourself a pest to your Insurance agency. I wish you the very, very best. All of my information is from my own experience. It's always best to talk with a Doc or a Pharmacist when in doubt. Sarah Jane"
