How long does penicillin take to work? Went to the doctor today for an earache in my left ear and an infection around the left front of my throat. He gave me penicillin in pill form. While I realize that it's not going to go to work immediately, about how long should I probably have before I start noticing some relief?

Brandy replied: "24-48 hours"

Shari replied: "About 2 to 3 days."

Commander_Data_ismydaddy replied: "If your allergic I think you notice it way quicker!"

jt replied: "For ear and throat infections, you may notice symptoms decreasing in 24-48 hours after you start the penicillin. If you are having ear pain, warm compresses to the area around your ear and throat may give you some relief. Gargling with very warm salt water may help throat pain."

tried and tested pain relief for toothache needed please!!? anybody have any good remedies to take away the pain, my dentist has prescribed penicillin which is working a bit but not completely. My teeth are regularly checked, to begin with thought it was a sore ear but now realise it is the tooth.any suggestions for pain relief welcomed. thanks..

LX replied: "Penicillan isan antibiotic not a pain killer you need to take tylenol also"

Allergic to ibuprofen and penicillin? So... is there any of you that have given birth to children and allergic to ibuprofen and penicillin? What did the doc prescribe you for pain relief? Thanks!

due 3/8/10 with baby #2 replied: "My doctor prescribe me Ibuprofen. And no I'm not allergic to Ibuprofen or penicillin."

stephy replied: "Tylenol 3 with codeine. You just have to watch your baby if you are breastfeeding because sometimes they can get sleepy. But it is considered safe."

Zachary is coming in 8 weeks! replied: "My mom is allergic to penicillin and she had no problems with her pregnancies. I'm allergic to sulfa drugs (which also limits types of antibiotics I can take) and my pregnancy has been very normal, despite a small bladder infection that I had in my first trimester. They had no problem finding an alternative drug, because they are plentiful."

Kelli - Pregnant with #1 replied: "I was born allergic to tylenol - since most medications contain it, I'm almost out of luck. However, since you're children are allergic to ibuprofen, I'd try using tylenol or excedrin. As for penicillin, there are lots of other antibiotics available. Talk to a doctor or pharmacist. They might have some better suggestions!"

Anyone know of better pain relief? I am having extreme dental pain (am taking ibuprofen 800 and penicillin) and not working.....wondering if there is a better pain relief until I can call the dentist as tomorrow is a holiday?? PLS HELP AM IN REALLY BAD PAIN TOOK IBUPROFEN ABOUT 7 HOURS AGO....MAYBE WONDERING IF I CAN TAKE ANYMORE? WOULD ER BE AN OPTION IVE ALWAYS BEEN ONE NOT KEEN ON THE ER FOR TEETH OR LOWER PAIN NEEDS....?

rxtech03 replied: "I would give the Dentist's office a call first thing tomorrow morning, If they are closed, they will either take their own calls or have someone cover for them. I don't see why you can't take another 800mg of ibuprofen if it has been 6-8 hours ago. Just make sure you have something in your stomach. My daughter works for a Dentist's office and they are open tomorrow. They could at least call something stronger in for you. Most insurances require a referral for you to go to the ER, and it will cost alot more money. You should be able to alternating it with tylenol. Take the recommended dose for you. Good Luck! Rx Tech"

Sandra M replied: "You could try some anbesol until you can get to the dentist. Also, you could put a call into the dentist and let him know that you are suffering and see if he can call in pain medicine for you until you get to his office tomorrow. You can take Ibuprofen two every 4 hours."

pain relief for tonsillitis? Im 27 and currently suffering from from Bacterial tonsillitis for the first time. So today I was prescribed penicillin, but I am using Ibuprofen to try and ease the pain, also drinking cold orange juice and eating small portions of ice cream. But the pain is horrible and not even easing. Has anyone came across any good measures for pain relief while waiting for the infection to clear up? Thanks xxx

LifeLessFrightening87 replied: "I hate tonsillitis so much, you poor thing! Try gargling with some warm salt water. Good luck!"

candlebizangel replied: "You're doing everything right, but you may want to try some ice chips, or some very cold ice water. Carol K."

granster5000 replied: "If you are ok with aspirin try sucking a soluble aspirin. It acts locally as well as systemically. I believe there are flavoured sol As about too."

f.camm replied: "hello! cavonia throat spray works a treat! also penacilin...my fiance currently had it and after getting penacilin from the doctors it went in 3 days !! gd luck x"

JANE J replied: "It horrid isnt it, i had mine out when i was 29. The best thing is to take ibuprofen and paracetamol. They are safe to take together. Do it with 2 hourly gaps, so take 2 ibuprofen and 2 hrs later take 2 paracetamol and so on. Atleast that way you might get some pain relief, Do you have any stronger pain killers you can take instead of the paracetamol. like co-codamol, they are fine to take with ibuprofen to. But the other thing i bought was a spray, thinks its called chloracept? But the analgesic throat sweets are good to as they numb you throat like the spray does. You will hopefully start to feel better tomorrow once the anti-biotics start working.."

Ria H replied: "I would advise you to go see a chemist. You can take Ibruprofen and Paracetemol together but I advise you to have a chat with the chemist before hand. You can also get throat sprays (Vicks and Corvonia do one) - these are basically a minty local anaesthetic and will numb the area. If you just see the chemist though they can advice which medications you can mix. feel better soon"

norfolkgal89 replied: "im having the same problem, been taking the pills since monday, warn ya it takes ages to get better, and its horrble,i cant sleep which i hate, sounds like ure doing everything u can, gargle salt water shud be fine good luck"

bec replied: "Chloroseptic throat spray (has anaesthetic in it) and you can also take paracetamol while you are taking ibuprofen."

MICHAEL S replied: "Hi sorry to hear about your illness, this is what I have used which helps, buy solpedine soluble tablets (buy the strongest out which I think is solpedine max or the variety with ibuprofen or codeine in) dissolve two tablets in half a glass of luke warm water, gargle the solution first before swallowing, they can be used every four hours. You can only buy them in chemists, they are a little pricey but they work as they are soluble and work much quicker than tablets, you need to take them regularly until your tonsils are better. They cost around £7.50 for a large box. Hope this helps, Mike."

What could be causing the pain in my mouth to move from one place to another? I am 19 now and have had problems with my two teeth on the bottom and in the back of my mouth since I was 14. I recently became pregnant and now have a medical plan that covers dental. I went to the dentist and he gave me penicillin to get rid of the infection and vicodin for the pain, and scheduled a root canal next month. Things started to go okay. I could chew with those teeth without them getting irritated even when I wasn't taking vicodin or Tylenol. For the past day or two, the pain has become very intense and will move from one of the infected teeth to my jaw, to my wisdom tooth, and go away again. The Vicodin doesn't really help and even though the OB and dentist say it's okay to take, I don't jump up and down with joy when I do it. What could be causing this and what can I do for relief?

MissySue replied: "Call your dentist and tell him what is happening like you have said here and that you would like another appointment as soon as possible to come in and have exrays. That way the dentist can see if any infection in the jaw area. Penicillin may not be doing the job and he may have to give you a different kind of antibotic for the infection. You may want to think again about saving your tooth, and just have it pulled out. Sometimes you have to be pushy with dentists, you may have to go to the office and try to get him to see you that way. It usually takes up to three days for antibotics to really start working good also. And sense you are pregnant he has to be careful of what he gives you for pain. Hope I have helped you in some way."

Have had Itchy sore throat for a long time? I have had this proble for almost 5 months now. Last october had a very bad sore throat which involved constant discharge of blood when I sneezed. I think I also developed an ear infection. I took 2 courses of augmentin to get any relief from the pain. Since then, its never cured properly. Constantly have an itchy throat especially if I drink anything chilled. Also frequently feel my tonsils/ throat are inflamed and I drink hot water to get some relief. Over the last couple of months, I have developed a sore throat several times and have had to take penicillin. One of the doctors I went to see diagnosed it as chronic tonsilitis. - is this right? This illness has made me feel tired and when my throat is sore, I feel ill and unable to work. Each morning I wake up and when I brush my teeth, a think yellow mucuos always comes out. What is this that I have got?

blinkin bunny wabbit! replied: "tonnsilitis! and theyre infammed and infected, see your doctori think you have to have them removed."

jim w replied: "welcome to spring ."

Grammie replied: "Your best bet is to go see a specialist (Ear, Nose & Throat) at this time. Perhaps you had strep that hadn't cleared out thoroughly and leaving it untreated is a no-no. Perhaps you have an ear infection with a side order of post nasal drip that's affecting your throat, perhaps you may have tonsilitis! These are things that an ENT would be able to diagnose as it's their specialty. Another thing to consider is allergies 101. I don't know where you live, but many states are in full bloom of all the wonderful things that bring out our seasonal allergies - and if you've never had allergies before, try to remember the golden rule - your system changes every year. For now, you stated that warm water helped alleviate the soreness for a bit, try the good old fashioned "warm salty water gargles" at least 4 times a day. If you like chicken broth, try getting either wylers chicken bouillon cubes or herb ox chicken bouillon cubes - mix one cube in with one cup of boiled water. It's filling, and the salt with the hot water (especially flavored) can truly be helpful. Best of luck and I hope if you go see the ENT (ear, nose & throat) doc, you'll have not only your answers, but some type of immediate relief!"

my mother is suffering from a knee pain. the ortho diagnosed it as reactive artheritis ? she has been given cifran 1gram for 21 days but still no relief. now she has been advised to have penicillin injection 10 nos. at an interval of 15 days can anyone advise? she went for second opinion her x-ray and blood test results were normal

bodmodangel replied: "Get a new ortho. Just to get a second opinion. If his treatement plan is more comfortable to your mother; than stick with him."

everythingspeachy2000 replied: "Nope...if she isn't happy with the doctor then she should get a second opinion. There is NOTHING wrong with second opinions. If she isn't seeing an orthopedic doctor and just a family doctor then ask to see a specialist...they would know and do tests and might have something better. Sometimes it takes time to get rid of things...and with arthritis the pain NEVER goes away...no matter what. It is damage to the bone and area around it. I have it in my neck and back and although medicationa and excercise (stretching and strengthening muscles around the areas) helps...the pain is always there!"

auntcookie84 replied: "That sounds mighty painful to go through! I would also get a second opinion. Has she tried glucosamine and condroiden with MSN? This stuff is wonderful for alleviated joint pain. Many arthritis sufferers take it and they sing the praises of it! It is an over the counter vitamin supplement and it may work wonders for your mom. It would sure beat getting shots in the knees!"

ANYONE KNOW ABOUT HOME REMEDIES FOR RASHES? The Gold bond lotion? I have a very painful itchy rash from strep throat. It's called scarlatina fever. I woke up this morning and could barely walk because it felt like the rash was making my skin tighten up. The doc. already put me on penicillin. This would be my 4th day with the rash and strep throat. It hurts so bad, can I use the gold bond for some relief? Or do you guys know any other home remedies for skin rashes? Thanks...

kdaniel1970 replied: "I know you have been to the doctor already, however, I would consider consulting him or her again. If you have had the rash for more than three days and now you say that it feels like your skin is tightening then maybe there is something else that is also going on. To answer the question about gold bond, I have used the gold bond powder for rashes and it seemed to help. But calling your physician would be wise due to the new symptom with the original disease."

leela1969 replied: "I have always found soaking in a tub with baking soda to be helpful. I also recommend aloe."

musician for Christ♪♫ replied: "sorry person above... but DONT SOAK IN A BATH! that will only cause your skin to dry out more. and cause the rash to most likely worsen"

cabbages(: replied: "try paw paw cream if that doesn't work then maybe see the doctors again."

Relief for ear infection?? Monday I went to the hospital (being Easter Monday didn't know if any dr's office would be open) because I thought I might have an ear infection in my right ear...Turns out the dr said I had fluid behind my ear and just keep taking my cold meds (had a bad cold for a week now) and just wait it out. Wednesday I went to the walk in clinic because my left side was sore now and not only was it my ear but my jaw...I wasn't even sure if it was an ear infection or a tooth issue at that point. The dr gave me 2 prescriptions at that point...Penicillin because my throat was all red and my ear drops (Locacorten Vioform). I tried going back to work last night (fast food restaurant) and found myself in a lot of pain .. I guess the drops make my ear sensitive to sound.. I have to use these drops for 5 days too. Is there anything I can do to help with this so that I can still work but not be in so much pain??? Thanks

roddy46112 replied: "Dr. do not like to give it but if yours will vicadin will do what at you want. ask for it"

sweetcakes replied: "OOh... I know how that can ache. The best remedies are: warmth and decongestants. Pseudoepherine (sp?) is cheap, safe, and non-drowsy. It's job is to dry up sinus/nasal/ear passage fluid. Ironically, you should drink a lot of h20 with all these medicines (that's including your penicillin) Find it in the store, or generic, brand for lowest cost. And the warmth -oh baby - it's a major comfort. Invest in a heat pad (trust me... eventually everyone needs a heat pad!), or place a washcloth in the hottest h20 you can stand and then on your ear/jaw. Then, to keep this warm, lay head on soft pillow, sore side down. The gravity also helps relieve the pain and gives the fluid a chance to drain, if it can. And that's my 2 cents worth. Oh, yeah... my 'hat's off to you' for wanting to show up when you're struggling with such discomfort. That's what real men do. (I'm presuming... you are a man, right?) Right on."

gizmos_dreamer replied: "I've had fluid in my ear many times. And being half deaf in the first place, it is very uncomfortable. The doc is right. You wait it out. He gave you the same things I was always given. Within a week or so, it should feel better. But yeah, cold meds, might help ease the pressure some. But get an excuse for work, you body needs to rest."
