Nissan Versa starting problems? Hello. I have a 2008 Nissan Versa, purchased in March of '08. For the last few months I've been having a horrible time getting it to start. I have to hold the key for a good ten-fifteen seconds before it catches and starts. There is no corrosion or acid on the battery, and no other signs of anything that I can see. I've now taken it into the Nissan dealership twice where I purchased it, and they refuse to fix it yet, stating "They can't duplicate the problem". I find this ridiculous that they kept my car for TWO weeks and couldn't duplicate it, yet it does it at least once or twice a day for me. The problem keeps getting worse and worse, and they seem to not want to help at all. My mother works as a manager at another dealership (chrysler/jeep/dodge) so I know how they operate, and I also know that I am seriously getting the runaround here. I finally called the Nissan Corporate office today and filed a complaint. HOPEFULLY they will actually do something about this. Anyone else have the same problem? The brakes are also super squeaky... and I am not a "hard braker". They told me this was normal.. true or not? I'm a college student and put alot of my hard earned money into buying this car myself. BIG mistake. Shoulda went with someone else I believe I got a screwed lemon too. The only problem is, they'll only "lemon law" a car that has had the problem AND been fixed 3 times. They won't even FIX IT a first time. I have one last appointment with them tomorrow morning at 8am. If its not resolved by this trip, I'm taking legal action. We just hired a lawyer for our company, and he'd be more than happy to seek after Nissan as well.

Somethingtotry replied: "More than likely it is the crank position sensor. I had the same problem with a new Nissan and that is what it turned out to be. They must have installed a bad batch on the assembly line. Tell them to check their technical service bulletins and I bet they find one on it."

She has warranty on it, and they gave her the run around as well. She got so sick and tired not getting any answers, she gave up and said 'forget it'. The car looks awful and embarassing. The check engine light has come on as well. Also, the 'weather stripping' on both rear doors has peeled off and hangs out the window as she drives. I would understand this happening if it were an older car, but this was and is a brand new vehicle. My mom says she got a 'lemon' but I say she got screwed. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful"

Jacob replied: "Congratulations on being brainwashed on thinking a Japanese vehicle is nice. Next time you should purchase an american vehicle. What you should do is take the battery into an independent shop, its possible the battery has a short in it and that may be causing the issue."

Nissan Versa Engine and Transmission I'm very interested in the Nissan Versa. I'm very cautious about it's powertrain though. Is the 1.8L engine and 4-speed auto straight out of the previous generation Sentra, which too had a 1.8L and 4-speed auto? I've heard the last gen. Sentra 1.8L had fuel injection problems and the transmission had a short lifespan. My friend's '05 Sentra started having a hard start condition around 35k miles. I would hate to buy a new Versa and have the same crappy engine and transmission.

John Paul replied: "QG-18DE motor is not the same as the MR18 motor now used. Versa Titidia they are called and the powertrain is very much like the Renault Cleo. However the automatic is Continiously Variable. Six Speed Manual Is plucked right off the Renault assembly line. So don't worry Nissan knew of the old powertrain shortfalls and the new powertrain seens to be dependable. I have been working on several 23,000 mile rent cars lately they seem to hold up quite well."

SITTINONTHEFENCE replied: "Versa 1.8 is a very different engine and the trans is actually a CVT."

James L replied: "motor on the Versa is not the same as the Sentra if you step up to the SL versa you can get the CVT transmission which is pretty much bullet proof."
