Need Penicillin in Questions
Why do you need to take penicillin until all gone? Ok, my friend told me that he has a tooth ache and so he took some left over penicillin from the last time his dentist gave him some. In other words he did not take the full dose the prior time he had a tooth problem (about a year ago, so he now took it to relieve the symptoms this time. But of course he will not have a full dose for this episode. I was trying to tell him why this is all bad to be doing, but could not remember specifically why. Please help me find a way to explain it to him.

Troy replied: "Because you often start to feel better before the infection is gone, so if you stop taking the antibiotic then you might get reinfected. You also select for resistent bugs, so if you remove the antibiotic you allow these to grow, potentially creating a superbug."

capnnikki replied: "The reason that you need to take all of antibiotics is that the bacteria can build a resistance to antibiotics. If a bacteria becomes resistant to an antibiotic, that antibiotic won't kill the bacteria which means you would have to take a different antibiotic. There are some strains of bacteria that are resistant to lots of antibiotics and are difficult to treat. So you should take antibiotics as directed by the doctor."

Ariel 128 replied: "He needs to take the full amount of penicillin the doctor prescribes for him even if he gets to feeling better and thinks that he is well because the penicillin kills out a few of the microbes and germs at a time. If he takes the medication for the full course, he will be sure that all of the germs are killed."

The Arrogant 1 replied: "Because it's not a sufficient dose to kill the infection, and it will contribute to the prevalence of antibiotic resistance. This won't be some abstract prevalence that's unrelated to your friend. He will carry antibiotic resistant organisms that could cause an infection and won't be easily wiped out. He could also give the infections to others. All in all, it's a bad idea to save antibiotics."

The Doc replied: "Often the symptoms of an infection will resolve before the full course of an antibiotic is taken, but it should still be completed because it is possible that some bacteria survive the initial days of the treatment, in order to make sure to kill them all, it's important to take a full course. In the case where an incomplete course is taken, it may be the case that not enough of the bacteria are killed by the antibiotic and the remaining bacteria (which will be the most resistant) will simply multiply and re-establish the infection, but now they will likely be more resistant to the antibiotic that was used."

Pranil replied: "For every bacteria there is life cycle, where the growing and reproducing is taking place. for overcome this a certain amount of drug per day for a period of 3 to 5 days is required. If the quantity of drug per day is (generally 1 gm/day) is not given, the bacteria get used to it and drug will not be useful. i.e bacteria get resistance to it. Then you have to use other drug. So do not discontinue the drug especially disease curing drugs, till the required period of treatment is over. -----------"

What happens when you take penicillin without a need for it? I used to get strep throat a lot when I was younger. I haven't had it in a few years now, but I'm pretty sure I have it right now. My tonsils are all white and huts like crazy. I'm pretty sure of the routine...see the doctor, get throat culture, get penicillin. My question is, what if I DON'T have strep? What happens if I take penicillin with nothing to treat? What danger is there when doing something like this?

americanfreeman replied: "There is no immediate danger, but you will build up an immunity to it and will need stronger and strong drugs to work. Not a good idea to do that. See a doctor."

TweetyBird replied: "Nothing terrible would happen. You might have some adverse effects from the med but that's about all. It would just be a waste of time. If your routine includes a culture, you should know that the entire test is a culture and sensitivity. The culture identifies the organism and the sensitivity gives a list of antibiotics that the organism is susceptible to. If penicillin, or any of the antibiotics belonging to the penicillin family, aren't on that list, your doctor won't prescribe it. It's as simple as that."

dwaraka n replied: "your idea is very narrow ---since the antibiotic penicillin not only act on The sterpt but also wide varieties organism --in any case the penicillin may not have full effect on the required organism but also to prevent it attaching the organs, also, you know to prevent the strepto infection of heart the patient is asked to take the penicillin for a long time may be up to 21 years of life"

RayeKaye replied: "If you see your doctor, he or she will probably do an in-office strep test. If it's positive, they'll give you antibiotics. If it's not, they'll tell you what is causing the sore throat. Taking antibiotics when you don't need them is pointless. So is not taking the entire prescribed dose when you DO need them. In the second case, only the weak bacteria are killed off, and the strong ones survive to infect someone else with a resistant strain, which means that person has to take something ELSE to kill the bacteria. That's why researchers have to keep coming up with newer, stronger antibiotics."

Do i need to use extra precautions while on penicillin? I am on the pill and i was prescribed penicillin which i took during my pill free week. i started the penicillin the day after i began my pill free week and i then came off the penicillin on the same day i started the next pack of my contraceptive pill. Do i still need to take extra precautions as i wasnt taking the two at the same time?

beanco replied: "So they say, its up to you really, but if you want to be extra safe, I would still use extra precaution for a week or 2, just to make sure. It not going to hurt any."

ali_roper replied: "I agree with Beanco - best to for safety - just in case Get well soon"

Ann B replied: "Hi, Though your course of anti biotics were during your pill free week I believe extra precautions should be taken for a further week at least. Also might I recommend that when on a course of anti biotics eat a probiotic yogurt drink daily to reduce stomach upset and the chance of developing thrush. Hope this helps."

papercut replied: "you certainly do."

MissA replied: "Probably not... the only antibiotic proven to lower the pill's effectiveness is Rifampin. Other antibiotics can alter the pill's absorption, but not necessarily decrease its effectiveness. There's not a lot of good systematic research on this topic. Being Ms. Nellie Rather-Safe-Than-Sorry over here, I'd personally use condoms for a week (any more than that is overkill). But you probably will be just fine if you don't."

heddiebelle replied: "you can if it makes you feel better it just depends on how storong the perscription is but i would just to be safe"

TweetyBird replied: "When penicillin is used during contraception it CAN decrease the effectiveness of the contraceptive as most antibiotics can and will. I tend to agree with my colleague, Ann B, and although the pen and the contraception were not concurrent, there may be lingering effects of the pen. Use an additional method of contraception for the next 2 weeks."

xquis81 replied: "You should use a back up birth control for at least a month after taking any anti-biotics"

Roy E replied: "Stay off alcohol whilst taking and for a few days after stopping antibiotics"

Seraphim replied: "The antibiotics affect the absorbtion of the hormones in your pill, and since you weren't taking the active tablets then it hasn't affected that during that week, however the antibiotics will stay in your system for a day or so, so the last antibiotic you took can affect the first of your active contraceptive pills, so you should still follow the seven days rule and use backup contraceptives like condoms for seven days after the last antibiotic."

What is the infection or virus called when you need to take penicillin before you give birth?? I have a bacterial infection and it can not be cured until I start going into labor.....haha I mean I have to start taking penicillin right before I give birth so the baby doesn't get it.......My midwife said about 35% of all woman get it and its not Herpes or anything like that I am married.....anyways if you can help thanks if not O well I will ask next time I see my midwife. Thanks!

baby GIRL due march 4th!! replied: "i think thats the strep b infection...i think lol...ya it's common :)"

Kaden's mommy replied: "strep b maybe? but i dont think they test for that until like 35 weeks"

manaakitanga replied: "strep B"

Prncess replied: "Group B Beta Strep"

live.laugh.love. replied: "Yep, it's Strep B. It's so common. I had it with both of my pregnancies. It's no biggie, BUT with my first labor I did throw up from the penicillin."

Adriana & Chase's Mommy replied: "It sounds like you have Group B Strep, doctors usually test you around 35-38 weeks to make sure you are negative for it. If they find you have it, you will be administered antibiotics prior to delivery and during the laboring process. Hope you feel better."

alimay replied: "strep b, I've heard its pretty common in pregnant women and its nothing bad. I know someone that did not have it with her first pregnancy but with her second she did."

Super excited! replied: "Group B Strep. Normally they don't check for that until after 30 weeks, though."

eener replied: "Group B strep"

why do you need to finish the whole prescription of penicillin? I'm doing a paper and need to be able to cite my answers so if you have a web site or resource you can recommend please let me know.

Bela replied: "After the first few pills, the symptoms may go away. However, the infection could still be present and will return - when it does come back, it will probably be resistant to that type of antibiotic and you'll have to use something stronger. Don't do that. Just finish the whole Rx. Try RxList.com"

speedy replied: "because the system takes it in gradually, so if it is'nt completed the infection will reappear. Also dont take alcohol as this will impede the process"

amandarez73 replied: "Antibiotics are given to kill off bacteria. It kills all the suseptible bacteria (to that antibiotic) in your body. If you only take a Rx for a short time, all you do is kill off the weakest bacteria and strong ones survive. Through normal mutation the strong ones continue to make more strong bacteria that over a couple generations (which is fairly quick in the life of a bacteria) become resistant to that drug. OK - that was pretty simplistic explanation but it is about right. Both these websites have good explanation and research about it: National institute of allergy and infectious disease (part of NIH): - good explanation --search under drug resistance"

rory replied: "You need to finish the whole prescription because bugs can live 10-14 days. When we don't finish the script, the bug becomes resistent and gets stronger which is why our antibiotics aren't working as well as they used to."

In need of good scholarly sources for finding statistics regarding the # of people allergic to penicillin? data can be worldwide or U.S., but must be scholarly sources for a formal research paper

GovDocGirl replied: "From the Centers for Disease Control: "Of the adult U.S. population, 3%–10% have experienced an immunoglobulin E (IgE) mediated allergic response to penicillin such as urticaria, angioedema, or anaphylaxis (i.e., upper airway obstruction, bronchospasm, or hypotension)...An estimated 10% of persons who report a history of severe allergic reactions to penicillin remain allergic." While it is not a scholarly source (ie. not an academic journal), it is an authoritative source (being from a government agency)."

i am allergic to penicillin,do i need a bracelet to notify people? i think i need 1 but i aint sure, should i have it tattooed and wear?

red5293 replied: "Penicillin is not typically given to anyone in an emergency situation like car accidents or other life threatening situations. More than likely you will be awake to tell the medical staff that you are allergic or you will have family or friends that will be contacted that can notify them. If you really feel that its important to you, just wear a braclet or something like that - dont get it tatooed on your body (that would just look weird)."

Isabelle I replied: "http://youranswers.burn.at you can get much information in this website, If you will check anyone blue link in website."

decemberthird1978 replied: "Yes, having a bracelet would be a good idea. What kind of reaction did you have? If it was a mild reaction, I would hold off on the Tattoo, and just make sure you tell all your doctors and let them know if you are admitted tot he hospital. If it was a severe reaction (whole body rash, swelling of the face or neck, swelling of the throat, difficulty breathing) I would DEFINITELY get the bracelet, and think about a Tattoo."

tatbj replied: "yes dear u should wear a bracelet... coz it is danger for u if they give u penicillin when u allergic with this. it can safe u life so for what u are waiting"

Mum Mum replied: "It's a good idea, just incase you are injured and cannot talk."

appygirl replied: "if you know that you will always be able to tell people then you can get by without a bracelet. i have a list of all my medications and allergies in my wallet. don't always have my wallet with me. they have all my information at my doctors but if i go to emergency room or in an accident, i'll probably be wishing i had a bracelet."

N.V.V.S.Ganesh replied: "no no need to wear a bracelet according to me."

Nah Z replied: "You should, even if you have a mild allergy- if you've ever experienced an anaphylactic episode (even if it's not from the drug but from another allergy), absolutely! It's a 10$ bracelet that, in a situation where you cannot communicate your allergy, might just save your life."

Do i need a prescription to get penicillin at walgreens or cvs? and how much is it? thx

Blazer85 replied: "You will need a prescription to buy it. No other way to get it in this country (legally anyway). The price depends on your insurance. If you have no insurance, you're probably going to pay anywhere from $13-23 for about 30 tablets. Usually, however, your doctor is not going to prescribe you 30 tablets... it would be more like 7-14 tablets, so it may be a little less than that. Regular penicillin is relatively inexpensive. You can also get 30 tablets for $4 at Walmart, but again, you probably won't get or need that many."

Steven's Love replied: "Yes you have to have a prescription to get it anywhere. The cost depends on if you have insurance or not and if you get the brand name or generic brand. Talk to doctor about it or the pharmacist."

clstldrmr83 replied: "Penicillin is a prescription antibiotic and can only be prescribed by a doctor. After you have a prescription for it, you can get it from any pharmacy. Cost depends on insurance coverage, but walmart pharmacy usually has generic name drugs for just $4."

Babe replied: "The quick answer is yes. You have to see a doctor and get a prescription. The cost will vary depending on where you live and the specific type of penicillin you get, but you should plan on something less than $20 for a ten day supply. The reason you have to see the doctor is b/c some infections do not respond well to penicillin but do respond to other antibiotics. Your doctor will know which will and which probably won't work with your particular problem. Be well Babe"

Johnny replied: "Yes! Antibiotic Drugs are Usually Prescribed by a Physician, as for a Price Range, each and Every One is somewhat different so the Price Varies."

do i need to finish the course of penicillin? penicillin 250 mg tablets - i had to take 2- 4 times a day. i started taking them because i had a sore throat but it went away. i have spots at the back of my tongue? how? (i dont know since when) i havent taken them for about 2 days..

Moon replied: "An antibiotic should always be finished when started unless you are allergic to it. If you have not taken it for two days, then you need to start all over again. It is now out of your system and you have broken the continuity of it. The spots on the back of your tongue should be addressed. I suggest calling the doctor back and explaining things and then doing as they suggest."

onemadgirl replied: "Even though you feel better, continue to take the penicillin until it's finished unless the doctor said otherwise."

If you are GBS + and take penicillin, does your baby need meds after he's born? to counteract it? I guess not since its not like morphine eh?

I'd rather be at the beach replied: "The baby does not get meds after s/he's born. You need the antibiotics 4 hours before the baby is born. I labored at home for 22 hours. I got to the hospital, got my antibiotics, and my son was born 3 hours later. If something like that happens, they'll keep you an extra day to moniter your baby -- but they don't give the baby antibiotics"
