Long Term Use Of Nexium in Questions
Prilosec OTC versus Nexium long term use? I have had acid reflux for about 15 years. I have been taking the occasional Zantac for flareups, but it has been pretty much under control. I would get a case of heartburn once every 2 weeks or so. the last few months I was getting heartburn daily, and the Zantac was no longer helping me. I went to my local pharmacy and grabbed some Prilosec OTC and it has been working great. I have been taking it for 12 days now, and only have 2 days worth left. I am hoping once done the heartburn doesn't return, but if it does I am going to either get a prescription for Prilosec or Nexium. I know there are some long term issues with both such as calcium absorption etc, but I am wondering which of the 2 is better suited for long term use and lower accounts of side effects.

jimmy replied: "i have acid reflux, i had a script for protonix which worked greeeat! prob is no health insure so at 145 a month i had to take an otc. i tried them all. prilosec was the answer. sometimes i have to take 2 in a day but, for the most part it works. nexium and prilosec are made by the same co. so most insure co won't cover nex since they say you can get prilosec otc. so if you have insure i would say go for protonix, you won't be diss trust me. good luck"

Does anyone know the long term effects of Nexium? I have been on Nexium for 5 years for GERD. It really helps me alot and if I go off of it for more than 2 days, I get into alot of pain with hearburn and upset stomach. I am 30 years old and don't really like relying on a drug like this. Are there any long term side effects to this drug?

The Avenger replied: "ya know it seems now days all drugs give you some sort of liver problems. Ya might want to get that checked out"

Charger43 replied: "I have Acid reflux and have been on Nexium for 7 years. I was told no side effects and haven't had any. Except for my third arm. ;^)))"

dynastronii replied: "There are no proven long term negative side effects that are worse then non-treatment. There is a small chance of stomach cancer,,, but less then without the medicine! I have been on the stuff for a decade myself,,, and will be for life."

fair_fun replied: "I took it for 4 years and now I'm broke. Is is to high for my blood. i started taking prilosc and it works fine for me. I don't know the side effects. I also have GERD. But my feelings are any long term drug is not good and I'm 55."

rockyfella25 replied: "It's just like any drug, the longer you take it, they always come up with something..They say it can cause heart problems..Have you tried prilosec..Thats behind the counter medicine. It works great and you might not have to take it every day if you watch your acid intake."

sscpli replied: "Hi I have been using Nexium for 4 years, and it is great drug, it stopped by heartburn and reflux problems . Recently I have found out that I have elevated liver enzymes. I have been trying all types of treatments but nothing was working, then a doctor friend asked me to stop Nexium and surprisingly in the last 2 months the toxic enzymes have been retreating. If u r using Nexium for a long time do get a liver function test just in case. I do believe it is great drug, I am suffering after stopping it but I also have to worry about my liver. good luck Sanjeev"

Is Nexium OK for long-term use? I have been using it since 2005 and it works well. If I miss it (which I rarely do), I can't even drink water without getting severe heartburn. Prilosec and other similar meds are like taking sugar cubes -- they do not work. How safe is it for me to take Nexium the rest of my life? Also, are the chances of me getting esophageal cancer much greater than the general population? I am a 37-year-old female with Barrett's esophagus (my dad has Barrett's, too, and is on the same thing -- also, my 30-year-old female third cousin is currently suffering from esophageal cancer). I am on a 1400-calorie a day nearly acid-free diet where I eat very tiny meals throughout the day.

Jayaraman replied: "NEXIUM - It is alaright. You can take on long terms basis. ESOMEPRAZOLE (Nexium) prevents the production of acid in the stomach. It is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), ulcers, certain bacteria in the stomach, too much acid in the stomach, and inflammation of the esophagus. It can also be used to prevent ulcers in patients taking medicines called NSAIDs. But I would suggest you to discuss with your doctor also so that he can approve your taking Nexium and there is not problem in future -"

Any long/short term symptoms for Nexium? I am 19 years old and I been prescribed Nexium 40mg tablets for my stomach acid reflux. I am just wondering if there are short / long terms of taking Nexium. Please don't just post some random website about Nexium, I would rather just read it on yahoo answers. Hence why I am asking on Y!A

lotsofquestions replied: "I currently take Nexium "as needed". There was a time for 3 years when I was taking it daily. I don't remember having any "side effects" I just remember thinking that it was a miracle pill...it was the one and only pill that actually took away the horrible acid reflux when NOTHING else worked. Mine was severe enough that at times I would be talking and it would literally shoot out of my mouth in a burning spray without warning. I believe you have nothing to worry about other then comfort of the "cure"."

Mitchell W replied: "While taking nexium, you might experience the below side effects: chest pain or tightness dark yellow or brown urine shortness of breath skin rash unusual tiredness or fatigue Side effects that usually do not require medical attention : headache diarrhea or constipation flatulence (gas) nausea/vomiting dry mouth Are these just random? ;)"

Is there a proper medical term for a period of long adrenaline rushes or highs, as in a week or so? I went to the doc because I was getting extreme chest tightening and palpitations that were unbearable a lot of the time, and he said that it was because of an extended adrenaline rush because I started working out after not working out in a long time. He gave me Nexium and Xyzal and also mentioned Prilosec to take as a generic version of the two.

whess60 replied: "Sounds like you have: acid reflux syndrome (ARS) That comes usually from a stomach disorder. In this particular situation, your stomach produces to much acid at one time(probably from your work outs)and it sends it back up to your esophagus. This is what is causing you to have ARS. Prilosec is a helpful OTC medicine, and all you have to do is take one pill every day,and you won't experience any more symptoms. On top of it,It is cheap."

Exactly how exactly did the aztecs and the american indians treat and or cure gastroesophegeal reflux disease? I take nexium on a daily basis to treat gastroesophegeal disease that i have and I am curious to know if their is a way to treat it with natural medicine or alternative medicine so I wont have to put chemicals powders inside my body that i don't know 100% clearly what are all of the negative effects that it produces or might produce inside of my body that worries me in the long term use of nexium.

Kanien:kaha'ka-[]-[]-^-[]-[] replied: "when you eat a diet consisting of fresh foods and live an active lifestyle, there is no need for anything like that because digestion works well. it is the modern diet with preservatives and chemicals that causes digestive disorders. look into getting a good source of digestive enzymes and take them every time you eat or feel heartburn. this will allow you to work WITH your body, which is trying hard to digest fod, instead of against it thereby creating other problems. you are wise to look for something other than their pills."

Antacid, long term????????/? I am 14 and take antacids because I have acid reflux, On the bottle it says to not finish in less than two weeks, and usually i finish in a month. Will this hurt my health or anything, and should I stop taking them, and just drink sprite instead when i have a stomach ache??? Oh and I am currently on nexium, which is slowly healing my stomach.

scorpio26 replied: "Try calling your pharmacist and ask him/her. Ask them if Nexium and antacids are compatible with each other. One may be working against the other. Hope you get well soon."
