Find Is Paroxetine Safe To Take in Q&A
Has anyone taken Paroxetine (Seroxat) and is it safe? I suffer from Obessive Compulsive Disorder and I've been to see a psychiatrist today and she's told me that I should be weened off my current medication Venlafaxine and go onto Paroxetine. I've been looking on the net and there seems to be lots of bad press on it. Does anyone have any personal experience of this medication? I'm 25 and my OCD is very bad at the moment

ami3 replied: "I took it about ten years ago and it worked wonders. I remember it took a couple of weeks to work though i cant remember any side effects"

vici replied: "how old are you i was 29 when i had these tablets one day i was in the bvathroom and took a knife and just cut through 3 large deep cuts in the top of my legs, i also punched my self to get bruises and scratched my self 300 times in my arm to see what would happen, i would stab my self with pins 300 times so they didnt help the ocd, i hurt my self and for some unknown reason the number 300 happened whilst hurting myself, my husband found me bleeding in the bath, got me to emergency psychiatist where i had to explain everything that i was doing, he took me straight off tablets, changed for somthing else i havent hurt myself since i have 3 ugly scars on my legs and a huge scratch scar on my arm so no i didnt like these tablets xxx vici"

quirkyfriendlytaff replied: "My mum has been on this most of her life and i can guarantee if she could go back and decide not too she would. she has tried to come off them and failed many times. And it isnt nice when she trys. As she has had fits and severe episodes of depression even tried to commit suicide on a few occasions. A few years back there was alot of people trying to take them to court (the people who developed them) but do win in court they had to come off them which she couldnt do. Hence the fact they are now known as Paroxetine and not Seroxat as they do not trade in that name anymore. But they are still the same. I would strongly advise not 2 as most people become dependent on them. there are not many that dont...and they are lucky"

RONA L replied: "i took it for around a year and the side-affects were bad for me i was going dizzy all the time that's all i can think of good luck and i hope you get well soon"

T C replied: "I've taken it for the last two years & it done wonders for me. I'm currently weaning myself off it slowly without any side effects."

is it safe to take anti-depressant medication? okayy so i have this anti-depressant medicine called paroxetine. theres 30mg in each pill. and i think im depressed. would it be semi safe to take one just to see if it works?

michelle c replied: "this medication takes 4-8 weeks to take effect, so just taking one wouldn't let you know if it works or not. How did you get this medication? Was it prescribed for you? What other medications are you on? What symptoms do you have and for how long have they been happening? How old are you? What other medical conditions do you have? Without this information we can't know if it is safe for you to take."

Gdoggy replied: "No medication is safe"

Zeep replied: "Yes. It's safe. All drugs on the market have been through several phases of clinical trials, the first of which is just to make sure they're safe. After they're shown to be safe, they go through trials to be sure they're both safe and effective. In the case of a drug that's been around for a while, like paroxetine, there is also plenty of surveillance of adverse effects after the drug comes to market."

Hope :] replied: "I don't think it's safe. I don't think any prescription drug is safe. Anti-depressants can sometimes have the opposite effect and make you even more despressed, and cause suicidal thoughts..I have been on many medications myself...none of them helped..remember only you can help you :]"

lizzie_4321 replied: "Paroxetine (brand name Paxil), is a safe and sometimes effective anti-depressant. However, it is only safe when prescribed for you personally by your medical provider. One pill is not magic, it often takes weeks to become effective. If you are depressed, go see someone and let them do the diagnosing of your exact condition and cause so that the proper medication can be prescribed just for you. Take a list of questions along with you, such as how long it will take, etc. Don't take someone else's medication."

Can you take paroxetine when pregnant? It's a generic brand of Paxil, which is an antidepressant. My sister has a friend and I just happened to see that she was taking this and is 5 months pregnant. Is this safe?

HouseMom replied: "It's considered a category D drug, so I would recommend finding something else. Actually, I can't believe her OB would clear her taking this medication, considering there are much safer alternatives on the market. However, they do say "Potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks (e.g. life threatening situations or serious illness)." Whatever that means. I don't think I'd be comfortable taking it and would look for something else."

*Twins due 7/16!* replied: "No antidepressants have been found to be safe for use during pregnancy. Most are a class C drug which means they don't have extensive or conclusive evidence either way, and are used when the benefit to the mother outweighs the risk to the fetus. Sometimes doctors find it is safer to keep the mother medicated, depending on the situation. Paxil itself is a class D drug, which means that there is actual evidence that it does pose harm to the fetus. My doctor doesn't prescribe any antidepressants for use during pregnancy."

herdoula replied: "Antidepressants are not a drug that you can quit cold turkey. I carefully weaned myself of Paxil before I tried to conceive and It took several months to get off that drug. I'm sure that she has discussed the best option for her with her doctor. Maybe in her case its better that she take it."

21 weeks pregnant with a boy replied: "No it's not safe in pregnancy, it tells you on the instructions leaflet that it's not to be used in pregnancy. Her health care provider should've taken her off this and given her something else in substitute for it."

I am on Paroxetine and just found out I'm pregnant!!! Are there other safe meds out there for pregnant women? I am on Paroxetine (Paxil) for my general anxiety and panic attacks. I just found out today that I am pregnant. I took six home pregnancy tests, and they all came back PREGNANT. I cannot get into see my gyno or regular Dr. until Thursday, because they are both gone to a convention. I have stopped taking my Paroxetine (40mg) before and I could not stand without feeling dizzy, and I felt constantly that I was going to have a panic attack. But I have been reading up on all the birth defects and horrible things that happen to women and their babies if the women take the paroxetine even just in their first trimester?! What do I do? I can't just STOP taking it, or I will have the ambulance taking me once a week for panic attacks, and I can't even stand without feeling like I am going to pass out if I just stop taking it all of a sudden! I want to have a healthy baby, but I can't be hospitalized for 9 months! Are there other safe anxiety meds out there for women who are pregnant? Help!

Lori M replied: "There are safe things you can take for that. The only thing you can do is try to make it without it for a few days until you can see your dr."

Ashley s replied: "well i would talk you your dr. but if you want a health child they will most likly tell you you need to be off of it. i am in the same boat you are and i want to ttc again. but my dr says there are no other meds out there and like you i need them. good luck"

xx_livindeadgirl_xx replied: "the FDA issued a public health advisory about the use of one form of anti-depressant therapy called paroxetine (Paxil). Studies had shown that there could be a very slight increased risk of cardiac defects in infants exposed to Paxil during the first trimester of pregnancy. my husband took zoloft and paxil and the dizziness is from withdrawls! your doc will know best!"

sharp p replied: "Oh honey panic attacks are terrible, but the effects of the drug on your baby can be horrible. 40 is a strong dosage, maybe they can put you on ativan low does once a day, but try to keep clam, find a counsleor and read books and panic disorder and pregnancy. I feel for you I to suffered for years with this but praise God it is under control, no meds! When you feel anxiety comong on you beat it!!! Thin k calmy and say I can overcome this, it will not overcome me., Then think of this beautriful angel on the way!!!! Good luck honey and talk to your obgyn for advice."

Fedup replied: "I was on this also when I was pregnant with my first son. I stopped automatically when I found out I was pregnant. It is HORRIBLE coming off of the stuff, and I know where you are coming from. The dizziness only lasts about a week. Can't you get therapy and try not having any medicine? They don't want to give anything in the first trimester. The second and third they are more lenient with medicines."

hopingforfirstone replied: "When I first became pregnant in November 2007 (unfortunately I miscarried), my gyno prescribed me Zoloft. I normally take Wellbutrin for depression and Xanax for my social phobia/panic attacks. She said I absolutely couldn't take what I used to and that Zoloft would be the safest. Honestly, now that I'm pregnant for the second time (still early, but certain) I'm going to check with my doctor that actually prescribes my antidepressants and see what she says. Your gyno probably doesn't have a full understanding of antidepressants. I feel that its good to get a second opinion. I too was on Paxil (six years ago) and had horrible withdrawl symptoms. I'm sorry but I think its best to wait it out and speak with your doctor to see what is best for you personally. I wish you the best! I'm hoping and praying that #2 will be the one for my husband & I!"

jasmin_flower69 replied: "I would stop taking if for the few days till I got in to see the DR. The dizziness and increased panicky feeling will happen, I stopped taking a similar drug after just three days and couldn't stop shaking. It will not last as long as you think, especially if you just stay at home and relax as much as possible, calming music and such. Try to think about a happy healthy baby that you can have, and that the Paxil might prevent that. It's not easy, but it IS worth it! It might also be a good idea to see if you can have a friend or someone spend some time with you, or you at their house. Being alone and off your meds is usually not a good idea. Also, check all of the numbers your doctor's office gave you and see if they have a standby doctor or someone. If not and you begin freaking out too much (Can't tell I've been through this, can ya?) go ahead and head into a hospital. Tell them what's going on and usually they'll be able to give you a different medicine to help with the withdrawals until your doctor gets back. Good luck!"

Is it ok to take this anxiety medicine? I was just prescribed apo-paroxetine 10 mg to help me constant anxiety. I also have big problems sleeping at times, and my mom has this bottle of apo-lorazepam 1mg which she says I could take half a pill if my anxiety is really out of control at night. What do you guys think? Is it safe ot take the lorazepam which was not prescribed to me?

Dagmara replied: "i think that if you take lorazepam only when you feel very anxious and not all the time, it should not be harmful for You, but I would still talk to doctor about it. Because he can have a different opinion and can prescribe You something else,....."

I have bad anxiety and I am kind of worried to continue taking Paroxetine (Paxil) what should I do?is it safe? To start I'm 19 years old... and I've been really sick for a few weeks now. And my sinuses are causing me to be really congested so I think that's why I have been having a hard time breathing. And well it caused to me to have 2 panic attacks in the past two days because I thought I couldn't breathe basically and I was short of breathe... anyone felt this way?? I went to the doctor and they just prescribed me Paxil. I only took 1 pill yesterday at 12. And it's only 10mg. I guess my question is this, since I have only taken one is it OK to just not take anymore? I am kind of worried to take it because I have been reading about all the side effects and the effects it can have on you if you try to stop taking it. Or should I continue taking it? I mean I have bad anxiety in gereral and have just always dealt with it. I'm always worrying about the stupidest things and always worry about my health and I convince myself that somethings seriously wrong with me...and I know for a fact I also have social anxiety because I used to always be scared and nervous to talk in front of Classes when I was in school. I just don't want to end up with serious side effects or the withdrawal symptoms I have read about. What should I do?? I'm so confused.... I can't decide if I want to take this pill or not... Both my aunt and gma have been on xanax for their anxiety and said it worked... and they think I should switch to that. I'm the type of person that wouldn't let myself get addicted to something like that so I think I could control it.. But you never know. I've never been suicidal so I don't think it would effect me in that way.... I'm just a little worried. So if anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated. I know drugs like this effect everyone differently... Just looking for some opinions. Thanks!! ALSO. I'm a VERY sexually active person with my girlfriend (: And I just don't want to lose any sexual interest at all......

Me replied: "Why are you considering getting off of Paxil? Paxil is an SSRI which means that it can take up to 3 weeks before you can begin to start to "feel better" so I would suggest that you continue to take it just to see if you like it's effects. Almost all drugs have an extensive list of side effects and adverse reactions, however these are only possibilities. If you start to experience any unpleasant side effects that you don't think are worth the benefits of the drugs, then ask your doctor how to wean yourself off Paxil, but in the meantime I would continue to take it and just see if it helps, remember they take while to have their full effect."

jethom33545 replied: "You need to ask this question to your doctor, nopt a group of strangers.Y! answers is a great place but its not a replacement for medical advice."

queenbeebeemarie replied: "You need to give Paxil more then one day to work.If there are side effects that concern you then consult your doctor but don't worry about side effects that haven't bothered you yet.Your doctor already knows about these possibilities and has weighed the good and bad consequences together and found that the good out weighed the bad. Also he or she probably doesn't think that you are going to have any negative side effects. You have to realize that not only has he prescribed you this medication but millions of other people are prescribed this medication in many different states and countries with only a small percentage of these patients ever getting any serious side effects. Also remember any medication you take can have side effects that are sometimes severe but only a small percentage of people who took those pills ever got them.If to many people got those side effects it would be taken off the market and law suites would be filed so the chances of anything seriously going wrong is very slim and if you happen to be in that small like 3% well then, you were just unlucky and I am so sorry for you,you just happened to be that rare 3% but I doubt anything will happen. If you are experiencing any side effects stop taking it and consult your doctor ride away."

What is the safest antidepresent to take? Well i have been reading alot about paxil (paroxetine) lately, and it seems to have abit of a past for bad side effects, some of the main problems i have been having is the near-inability to "release" during self given pleasure.. but thats not the main issue, i was reading about the fact the pills may cause heart problems over long used periods.. so what i'm wondering is, is there any antidepresents that don't cause sexual related issues, and give the possibility of heart problems?

Emily replied: "i take prosac or zoloft..."

lovely lady replied: "prozac works good"

b_bardi99 replied: "these meds all have side effects.I think if the Dr decreased your dose, you will be able to have an orgasm.yes, i had this problem, when taking high doses of antidepressant, so it does the same to men and women. I am still taking one medication, at a lower dosage, i am fine having "release".lol"

Paroxetine and LSD ?Are there any side effects? My friend is planing to take LSD tomorow, but she is on paroxetine therapy. Is that safe for him?Can paroxetine made some side efects while combinig with LSD? I mean i would never take LSD with threecyclyc antidepressant lol i hope not :D

Mankind replied: "Prob not the greatest idea anyways. He lacks discipline!"

LMHP replied: "It's not safe to dose whether you are on medication or not. Being that your friend is already on an anti D, she already suffers from a mood disorder. Taking acid can exacerbate a mood disorder and make it worse. Also, while she is trippin', the acid will manifest itself as a mood disorder and she is likely to seem bipolar and very moody while she is trippin. It will NOT be a pleasant experience for her."

Alexis H replied: "well i looked that up today, and yes every drug has some side effest to it, either it be eatting alot or eatting to little or damage to the body. but LSD (acid) (witch there are two types of acid to take) (witch this one isn't the bad one, the other one is) isn't as bad as some of the other stuff out there like heroin.....but i attacted a site where it says everything about it. remember to tell your friend most drugs won't let your brain go. "

Shake-Zula replied: "any 2 chemicals mixed together will have side effects. you could possibily do a cross reference with the paroxetine and Lysergic Acid Diathylamide to see what the side effects might be. but i wouldnt chance it."

concept872 replied: "if your friend had depression problems i think the day after would be a concern.. u feel very drained and depressed.. if your friend is on antidepressants already it may be harder for him to deal with the day after.. i know a hard time the next day finding life dull and without meaning and i did not have problems with depression.."

spiritualjourneyseeker replied: "You friend needs some professional advice."

If you stop taking Prozac (fluoxetine) do you get "brain zaps"? What abot Paxil (Paroxetine)? I had heard particularly of some SSRI's causing brain zaps for months, even when tapering off properly and slowly. I'd also heard that Paxil (Paroxetine) had horrible withdrawal effects, and many were actually given Prozac (fluoxetine) to help taper off. So Is Prozac safer than Paxil? Could both cause brain zaps?

snj8785 replied: "I was on Prozac since I was 15 (Im now 22) and if I would accidently miss a dose or not get my perscription filled I would get the brain zaps, it sucked...I knew someone on Prozac and never got those when she was off of it...I finally decided that something that does that when u r off of it is bad and I completely got off(no meds at all). I felt those "zaps" for about a week, then they lessoned and lessoned, I think it took about 3 weeks but I feel the same as I did on the meds...really think about it before starting any meds as to whether or not u need it.."

Your Assistant replied: "This is what I do. It all depends on the person. You have to just take it all a day at a time and do it all with a psychiatric doctors oversight. Never let a regular md give you any psychiatric drug, I do not believe they are qualified. Good Luck, All ssri's cause some sort of withdrawal but not fatal or addictive just unpleasant and can cause suicidal ideation, discomfort and need to be monitored. I remain, Your Assistant"

cnbbn, replied: "Prozac is deffinately easier to come off of. I was on 40mg of prozac for about 6 months. My doctor didn't taper me off, he just told me to stop taking it when I started taking Lexapro. It was a few hard days, but I did it. I didn't get the brain zaps with that. Although when I was on Paxil, I had a very hard time coming off,"

Penny M replied: "When I hit 43 Prozac stopped working for me. I then switched to Effexor but that hasn't helped either. I never went through "brain zaps" with either one."

Should I Take This Antidepressant I'm Only 14? I'm a 14 year old male, I suffer from Social Anxiety Disorder and OCD. I went to my MD today with my mom and we talked about these issues I'm having. He eventually prescribed paroxetine, an antidepressant. He claimed it was safe and "Non Habit-Forming". Although when I got home I looked it up on some reliable sites. I was worried when I read the common side-effects such as insomnia, erectile/sexual dysfunction, weight loss etc. and that it HAS withdrawal symptoms. I even read that thousands of people sued because their doctors claimed it was "Non-habit forming" and they suffered from withdrawal. I also read it shouldn't be taken by children. I told my mom I don't feel comfortable (My exact words.) with taking it and she flipped out. She said "Well then don't come to me for help anymore!" and " Then you will be like this forever!". She's acting as if this is my only solution, and these disorders are a serious issue for me. Should I take this antidepressant?

boogeywoogy replied: "Yes, you should. Withdrawal symptoms can be avoided by slowly tapering off the medicine. The problem comes from just stopping the drug without tapering off of it. Insomnia will happen in cases of undetected/undiagnosed bipolar disorder. On the other hand, antidepressants actually HELP depressed individuals to sleep. Sexual dysfunction in somebody your age shouldn't be a concern. As for antidepressants causing suicide in teens, it's likely the teens who do commit suicide do so because of the depression and the drug being at too low a dose, not because of the drug itself. You will undoubtedly experience an improvement in your OCD and Social Anxiety symptoms. I'd say the medicine is absolutely worth a try. It'll take about 3-4 weeks before you'll notice real improvement. Please get some counseling to work out your feelings. Your mother's attitude certainly isn't helping your situation, and learning to cope with her personality problems will do you a world of good. Counseling will help you to set boundaries with her and prevent "emotional baggage" from following you into adulthood."

truocduong replied: "Although most of us are not rich. But we, who are in this western world are in deed living in a very rich lifestyle comparing to the rest of the world. When we have so much useless time to sit around and question about this nonsense life, we all become depressed. Notice that people in the poor world do not suffer depression much because they do not have much time to sit around and think about nonsense things as we do. So the best way to treat your depression is to go out and keep yourself busy, instead of sitting there and let the drugs ruin your body. Here are things that you can do: 1. Go out and work on the backyard, playing with animals, and exploring nature, helping your mom in the kitchen, cleaning up the house, the gargage, decorate your room, etc. 2. Create some hobbies to keep youself busy. Doing something like artworks, woodworks, inventions, creating somethings, telling jokes, singing, acting, making fun of yourself, trying find reasons to laugh and make others to laugh. 3. Go out and talk to people, who are older or younger than you who need companies. Try to help them anyway you can. Try to be their friend. 4. Try to pray and give thanks to God for everything that you have. Just pray to the God of Heavens only - not to any dead body like Jesus, Buddha, etc. The dead knows nothing and can do nothing to help you! Just go out and get active in life. Remember, each of us has only one life to live. And this wonderful planet earth is the only place that God creates for our life. Not heaven, not hell! Desire no heaven! Fear no hell! They mean nothing! The dead knows nothing! enjoys nothing! fears nothing! Heaven or hell means nothing to a dead person! So, stop depressing! But go out and enjoy very moment of your life when you are still fortunate to be alive! Don't be afraid! Just be yourself and go out and live this one and only life of yours to the fullest. You only have this wonderful life once and only once! Do not just sit there and let it depress into nothing! Let today be the first day of the rest of your exciting life! Go! Get up and go out now!"
