How To Stop Caffeine Headaches Posts in Q&A
What is the best way to stop caffeine without the headaches? I have a really bad pepsi addiction. Well, more it's that I am afraid of getting a caffeine headache. The trouble is is that I also have migraines. I've tried to stop soda before, however I got caffeine headaches that most of the time turned to a full blown migraine. Which puts me out of commission. I have two toddlers, so I don't have time to be out with a migraine. Any suggestions other than caffeine pills? The caffeine pills don't seem to work and are awfully expensive when trying to compensate with them.

Jeff A replied: "Taper off gradually over about 3 weeks. It works for me. I get screaming headaches if I try to quit cold turkey."

litecandles replied: "Drink four ounces less each two days for a few weeks. If it is the sugar, replace some of it with plain iced tea. But still taper off on the caffeine."

pirate replied: "taper off gradually over about 3 weeks. It works for me."

xeydc replied: "I WAS ABLE TO GET CONTROL OF A CAFFEINE ADDICTION BY DRINKING ONLY ICED TEA WHICH I DON'T LIKE...I WOULD WATCH CAREFULLY FOR THE FIRST SIGNS OF HEADACHE AND DRINK A HALF A GLASS OF TEA. THE TEA WOULD STOP THE HEADACHE IN JUST A FEW MINUTES. NOW I HAVE ONE CUP OF COFFEE IN THE AM, MADE WITH HALF REG, HALF DECAFF. I OCCASION LY HAVE A PEPSI BUT MOSTLY DRINK WATER,"

Joycee replied: "to break mine...I took advil on schedule from the second I got up to bed time everyday for about two weeks. I also loaded up on ice tea and water....If you keep your stomach full of water...you won't crave the soda... It took me about two weeks of doing but I have been soda free for about three months now... The headaches are the worst but if you can get thru the headaches your clear."

How do I stop caffeine headaches? I'm trying to wean myself off Coca Cola and onto water, is there any vitamins or something I can buy to stave off the caffeine headaches?

psoup replied: "Excedrin caps have caffeine in them. Perhaps taking them for the headache would keep you off the pop but satisfy your body's craving for caffeine -- along with the acetominiphen and aspirin -- to help with the headache. . Excedrin® Extra Strength The combination pain reliever that contains acetaminophen, aspirin and therapeutically active caffeine."

joe replied: "your brain is going trough withdrawl just like it would from any other drug or alcohol. you have to slowly stop drinking so much coffee. wein yourself off then try to drink decaff"

DLA replied: "I try to quit coffee before, unfortunately the headaches will be gone in a couple days, and then you won't miss it."

susan replied: "Green Tea (not herbal) has 15 mg of caffeine. A cup will stave off the headache as you wean yourself from the coke."

Steve T replied: "I did this at the beginning of the year, basically wean yourself of gently. I cut down the number of daily cups of coffee gradually over a period of 3 weeks, substituting either with tea or Anadin (headache tablets) which have caffeine in. People often quote that tea has more caffeine than coffee, but this is on equal weights of tea and coffee and not on equal cup sizes, basically you put less weight of tea in a cup than you would do with coffee. It does take a period of time, but have tried stopping "cold turkey" before, and always got headaches. Hope this helps"

What can I do to stop getting bad headaches from caffeine? When ever I miss a cup of coffee in the morning I get very bad headaches throughout the whole day and even until the next morning (Like now, unfortunately) I feel like I'm going to throw up, I get hot and cold flushes and very dizzy. I don't know why, I don't even drink alot, only one cup every morning. I can't stop it because I just dont want to go through massive headaches. Is there a simpler way?

melody replied: "take cafeeine pills."

MrsDuran replied: "Cut down very slowly. The first week drink 3/4 of your regular amount. Week after that drink 1/2 of your regular amount. Third week drink only 1/4 of your regular amount. By the fourth week your headaches should be gone and you can be free from all the withdrawls!"

F replied: "Sounds like you will need to give up the coffee unfortunatley. I used to get massive migraines until I found out it was caffeine causing them. Your symptoms sounds similar to what I was experiencing. I now use Berocca of a morning to pick me up instead of coffee. It takes a little while for your body to get used to not having a morning coffee, maybe a week, but really worth it. Good luck :)"

Violet G replied: "Yes, you have to the taper the amount of coffee you drink. Each morning drink less and less until you finally don't need to drink any. You might of developed a dependance to the caffeine, though it is just one cup it still has 150mg of caffeine in it, that's all your body might need to develop dependence to it. So just taper it off slowly, and you should be fine."

How can I stop drinking products with caffeine IE:soda, without the headaches that result withwithdrawls? I tend to drink a lot of soda, not coffee, but everytime I try to stop, I get horrible headaches. I know that it is from withdrawl, so I was wondering if the there is a good way to wean myself off, without the headaches, or if I should just go cold turkey, and suffer through the headaches.

dexter replied: "slowly reduce your consumption"

rmikep2003 replied: "I had something similar, i just limited myself to one per day and started taking multi vitamins..Worked for me, hope it helps"

huggz replied: "Reduce gradually, its less painful and stressful. Drink 1 can less each day until you are off it. Increase the other fluids you drink to compensate."

Amie K replied: "Unless it is medically necessary, don't go cold turkey. Ween yourself by drinking half of what you normally drink for a few days, and then half of that for a few days and so forth so that your body can detox from it. I too got headaches from the caffiene withdrawals, and it isn't worth feeling like crap for a week."

Tina R replied: "The best way to do this without the horrible withdrawal headaches is to wean yourself from them gradually. It will take maybe a week or two at most. You will reap the benefits soon enough and without the side effects! :) Good luck! :)"

cay_damay replied: "Slowly reduce your consumption. Obviously, I don't know how much you drink, but if you have 5 sodas a day try cutting it to three (or something equivalent to you), and then cut it to 2 then to 1 as you feel able. It really shouldn't take more than 2 weeks to totally wean yourself off if you stick to it. If you feel thirsty in between sodas drink water. Water will help you feel more energized without the caffiene, and it will help clean some of that caffiene out of your system. If you crave bubbles and some flavor while you are trying to wean yourself, drink seltzer. Not flavored water or any of these fancy things with fake sugar in it, but just seltzer with three ingredients: water, carbonation, natural flavors. They really help when you want that soda-flavor-carbonation feeling. Good luck!"

mattzcoz replied: "I know what you mean, you can get a vicious headache, eh? Mine in the past has been due to coffee, just careless with how much I drank. I went to half caf/half decaf, then down to decaf. At that point, having coffee wasn't a real big deal. Since then I've drunk it on and of, sometimes caffeinated, sometimes decaf. Now I can take it or leave it. So for soda, look for ones that have less caffeine, try to stretch out the periods between or just nurse that bottle/can for a longer time. Make sure you stay hydrated too. It doesn't take long, maybe a week, to be pretty comfortable without it. If you get headaches and have no coffee/caffeinated soda handy, you could also temporarily try an aspirin product like Anacin that includes caffeine."

If I stop having any caffeine will I get headaches.? I usually drink a couple of coffees a day. I am trying to cut back on it, because Ive notice I have been getting stomach aches which I think are caused my too much caffeine. So I stopped caffeine completely today. I didn't have any, and now I have this massive headache. I am sure it is withdrawals from caffeine, but how long will it last.

ElaineGSD replied: "Yep, sounds like caffeine withdrawls. Lasts about 24-36 hours if you completely stay away from caffeine."

el replied: "i think so, if you drink that much everyday, and go cold turkey, you will probably get headaches. i think you should just have maybe 1 or 2 cups every morning and cut down Little every day."

Bird watcher replied: "i dont think you get withdrawals quitting your usual 2 cups of coffee a day. But maybe it is because you need to sleep ? hope you dont get anymore stomach aches. if you love coffee try making it less strong, or mix it with half and half and make sure you eat something."

Medicine Woman replied: "Yes, you will get headaches and it lasts different amounts of time on different people. You need to cut back a little at a time, never cut something cold turkey. I would buy caffeine free coffee and mix a cup of caffeinated coffee with the decaf coffee and make it like that in your coffee pot. I would use the smallest can of decaf with just one cup of caffeinated mixed together that way you will still get some caffeine but not as much. Then keep backing off until you only have decaf in your pot. Even decaf has 1% caffeine in it. If you buy a large can of coffee I would use 2 cups of the caffeinated coffee with the decaf (mix them together in the can) then gradually back off on the caffeine coffee you add to the decaf coffee."

Can you get headaches from caffeine withdrawal. Everytime I stop drinking soda cold turkey I get headaches? and feel really fatigued and lazy. Can coming off caffeine dependency trigger headaches? I exercise everyday (1.5 hours) and eat really healthy if it wasn't for the soda (16 oz daily consumption)

br@ski replied: "yep happens to me every time"

AngelFish replied: "Yes, unfortunately headaches are a symptom of caffeine withdrawal. I'm a Saturday/Sunday sufferer typically because I try to abstain from caffeine on the weekends to give my body a "break." I feel that I need it to function at work, though."

Corrin replied: "Oh yes sir! I get them all the time. I drink Diet Coke like its going out of style. If I don't get a cup of coffee or have a Diet Coke first thing in the morning, I get a terrible headache which has turned into migraines on certain occasions. To lessen the dependenc of caffeine, cut back on how many sodas you have a day until you are down to maybe 1 or 2. Before I figured out that it was caffeine headaches my doctor prescribed meds to help with those headaches. Good Luck, I still drink my Diet Cokes like water, lol"

How do I STOP caffeine without getting a terrible headache? My doctor has told me I need to elimanate caffeine completely. I cannot handle headaches at all. I have had migraines my entire life so I really can't deal with any type of headache. I drink coffee on days I work plus alot of Coke Zero. In the past I have been able to stop drinking diet cokes and I don't have coffee on weekends. But quiting cold turkey is killing me. It's not the waking up part I need help with. I have been prescribed Provigil which I am not using because I can't stop the caffeine. I know I have to do it slowly, but how? On weekdays I have about 2 cups of strong coffee then start diet coke as soon as I get to work. I have between 4-7 12 oz. cans a day. So how long should I expect it to take to quit completely?

NATIVE NEW YORKER replied: "YOU DON'T NEED DIET SODA YOU NEED CAFFEINE FREE SODA COFFEE IS THE WORST DO IT SLOWLY- TAPER OFF GOOD LUCK"

CJ replied: "Mix decaf coffee with a little regular, to start to get off the caffeine, at work start drinking water, I think you might be surprised, the water would be good for you...good luck!"

the icecream tender replied: "I set myself on lets say a 14 day period each day lowering your intake of caffeine by just a little and make sure by the last day you should have given up the stuff. I went from using 5-8 pounds of sugar a week to now living on splenda and I love it!"

jdnmsedsacrasac1 replied: "caffeine is a stimulant. Quitting it has side-effects. Headaches are very common. Give them time, about a week, and you should be alright. But if you cave in and have some, your body will say, "hey, that feels good" again and when you quit you will have the head ache again. Quit. Don't return to drinking. And you will be glad you did. Four - six cans per day is a lot. Try drinking that much water a day. You will do your body a favor!"

mind_the_gap replied: "Start mixing your regular caffeine drinks and coffee with caffeine free. Just do it slowly like if you put 4 scoops of regular coffee in your coffee pot use 3 regular scoops and 1 decaf. Then each week reduce the caffeinated and replace with decaf. You can do the same with colas. Just mix them in the glass the same way and cut down gradually. You should be able to be caffeine free in just a few weeks without the horrible side effects."

juanandonlyone replied: "slowly ween your self off of it."

jane l replied: "You just have to go cold turkey girl. treat the headaches and the syptoms, try drinking lots of herbal tea. ...and don't drink caffeine free soda, the caramel color and chemicals in soft drinks gives ya stomache cancer."

DJS replied: "Caffeine is like predisone in that it simply is not wise to quit cold turkey. First, start with your regular coffee and caffeine-containing soda as a baseline. Next, mix your coffees. Start with 3/4 regular, 1/4 decaf. Gradually increase the percentage of decaf until you've switched completely. Depending on your baseline consumption and your body's sensitivity, you can probably complete the process in anywhere from 1 to 4 weeks. It's hard to blend sodas, so just start by alternating regular with decaf styles and just switch over gradually. Also, do the diet drinks contain aspartame (Nutrasweet)? Aspartame is well known to be a headache causer, and I mean throbbing headaches (I know, I can't go anywhere near the stuff)."

headhunter replied: "slow an mixes decaf 50- 50 then start with more decaf an drink apply vinegar with what a table spoon it will get the toxic out of you"

MissieMac replied: "My doctor told me to gradually switch to decaf coffee and then gradually go off that to herbal tea or a substitute for coffee like Ganocafe. I drink both and you have quite a few flavors to choose from. It took me quite awhile to get off caffiene ( can't remember how long ) but I did it and feel much better and I hardly get migranes or any kind of headaches anymore. Good Luck!"

Your Best Fiend replied: "So, drink less of each every day. Drink only one cup of coffee for the first week. Then, drink no coffee the second week. Then, drink one less can of soda the next week and so on. If you need to wean yourself off it faster, then substitute a shorter period time in for the week in each step. I tend to go on and off caffiene. I just stop drinking it. The headaches will go away in a day or so. Then, you are free of the addiction. If you have had migranes all your life, then you should be able to deal with the withdrawal headaches. All I try to do is remain still, and my head doesn't hurt. But, to each their own."

bobbyvalinteno06 replied: "i dont know"

mermaid.marie replied: "do it slowly.. =)"

Zwick K replied: "Like anything work your self off it slowly, when i lowered the amount of coffee i was having in a day, i tried to stop all together on the first day, that's where the headache came into play, after that, i went back to my usual 7ish cups a day, then the next week lowered my self to six, and stayed at that until my body adjusted to having less caffeine, then continued doing that until i was at 2 cup a day and wasn't experiencing headaches anymore, so yeah try that, it takes a bit of time, but it works in the end."

Connie replied: "I got off pop or soda depending on where you live I went with out for as long as I could stand it. the first week-- the head aches were really bad I let my self have one when ever I couldn't stand it any longer --you will get used to no caffeine, but will take some time good luck!"

buster replied: "I know how you feel. I switched to XS Energy drinks caffeine free flavors. They taste great!! Plus they have no sugar and no carbs. Go to this site to learn more lbrown-miller.qhealthzone.com"

Jessiham replied: "Looks like you got a lot of good ideas/tips here already- Best of luck to you- and don't forget to drink tons and tons of water- A dehydration headache on top of a caffeine headache is likely to put you in bed all day."

How to Stop a Caffeine Withdraw Headache? I stopped drinking diet soda 24 hour ago and is having a strong internal pressure headache on the righ-front side of my head. Should I walk, take a hot shower, bleed myself, take some shots, exercise, or just take it like a man?

oldtimekid replied: "Drinking water will help to detox, and taking some supplements that work as cleansers may help as well. Specifically, Apple Cider Vinegar, Green Tea (decaffeinated), Chlorophyll (fantastic cleanser), and even good amounts of fiber and water helps some people (although it's not very comfortable for the lower level of detoxification you get)."

ncshrty05 replied: "theres nothing that you can really do to ease it much... I had the same withdrawl effects after having drinking 3-4 drinks of Starbucks Frapuchhino drinks a day. It takes about a week after you stop drinking the caffeine drink for the withdrawl effects to wear off. I suggest that if you want, keep drinking the diet soda, but choose the caffeine free kind. It actually tastes pretty good."

hyehokis replied: "Try Gatoraide- It is helpful with Caffiene headaches!"

fiddlesticks replied: "It sounds to me as though you are taking it exactly like a man!"

Nurse Susan replied: "1] do you drink any other caffeine/ [ coffee, tea, chocolate? ] Try a big iced tea, if all else fails [ and you're a wuss...] 2] Motrin or Tylenol or Excedrin migraine 3] cold pack at back of your neck [ use small bag of generic brand frozen peas or corn in ziploc bag, wrapped in paper towel or dishcloth - can be re-used indefinitely, just don't eat it ] 4] exercise [ it will distract you ] 5] suck it up - lasts from two days to two weeks! [ Now, don't you feel sorry for all those pregnant ladies who gave up caffeine? ] TIP: try cutting back gradually - less painful. [ 1/2 average for three days, then 1/4 for three days, then one a day, etc.]"

deborah l replied: "thats a tough one. have you tried a cup of coffee. maybe just wean yourself off the soda slowly rather than just quit. how ever many you were drinking decrease that by half and then tomorrow decrease and eventually you will be free and clear. no need to make your life miserable by trying to stop cold turkey."

Ambassador Z replied: "Take 2 Excedrin Tension Headache tablets. It contains caffeine and will also ease your headache. Don't take it before bedtime or it will keep you up as well. I recommend that you follow (after the headache is gone) with drinking plenty of water to flush the toxins from your body (about 6 cups or more in one day). But please, don't bleed yourself. :-)"

Can you get headaches when starting to drink caffeine again? A few months ago I stopped caffeine totally and had horrible headaches the first few days. Now I decided to drink it again and for two days have had really bad headaches.

Cyd replied: "Yes caffeine will give you headaches both when you start to use it and when you try to quit. Hang in there if you really want that coffee or soda the headaches will eventually go away just like when you quit."

How do I stop drinking Caffeine if I get headaches from not drinking caffeine..? I'm not an energy drinker, I don't like red bull or anything like that. I just have a problem with pop (some call it soda...like pepsi, coke, mt. dew, etc...) and I really can't stand the side effects, like dehydration, dark circles, & heart palpitations...but when I don't drink caffeine I get a headache, then once I get the headache I drink caffeine and it goes away...I don't crave it, but the headaches are so annoying. =/

krazegurl_ds replied: "Just take some OTC headache medicine like Ibuprofen or Tylenol for a week or so til your body gets over the caffeine jitters."

yessirr replied: "i had headache issues for over a month, but i never have caffeine. so they actually make me have it when i get a headache, but not an excessive amount. you should try to stay awau from it unless you really need it because it is not good for you. you might want to see a doctor and tell them about it depending on how bad your headaches are because you may be given medication over the caffeine."

David replied: "pop is what it,s called in the midwest. try coffee with cream. real cream. black tea with lemon, or cream. these are what i drink. i rarely drink soda. once a year maybe an orange crush. soda(pop) is really nasty stuff, especially mountain dew. if you,re dehydrated, you ned to be drinking water. that,s partly why you have headaches. dehydration causes headaches. my wife was a pop drinker, and had to stop because of the heart palpitations. she started drinking water, and now drinks tons of it. positive side effects: no more UTI,s. she has to drink a high quality decaf coffee, and never has caffeine caused headaches, either."

Sandra replied: "Use caffeine pills (ask for NoDoze and then buy the generic next to it). Take one for the headache. Then gradually taper off. It's better than drinking soda, which nobody should drink, whether there is caffeine in it or not. You can get caffeine use down to zero, or to where you can take it or leave it."
