Herbal Zoloft Information in Answers
should i stop taking zoloft for anxiety disorder and go herbal? i have taken zoloft before for only 4 months once and really didnt do much for me still had symptoms of anxiety just a little less frequent. i have been on it for a little of 2 wks now and been getting symptoms of hypertension..

PhuQue replied: "if you can control you anxiety with herbs , diet and exercise...do it"

Ali C replied: "what's the dosage of Zoloft? I was taking it 50mg/day and it didn't do much for me either. my doctor told me to make it 150mg/day (gradually), and it was like a miracle. all my anxiety went away."

free your mind replied: "i dontk now usually you need to be on something for 6 months for it to work in full. ummmmm i dont know if things get worse then stop taking the zoloft at the first sighn of things getting worse if not id try to stick with it."

Fred W replied: "This is a great course/product which helped me basically CURE myself of anxiety/panic attacks and stop them for good, check it out below: I highly recommend it, good luck."

Is there a herbal supplemant that has the same effect as drugs like Zoloft, etc? Thanks dropping...has zoloft made you gain weight? Any recommendations for that side effect?

dropping bombs on your mom replied: "technically no...Zoloft is an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor). it chemically acts on the receptors in the brain so that your body is utilizing more of the "feel good" chemicals like serotonin. that's why Zoloft is recommended for depression. it's also been found to be helpful with anxiety and panic attacks as a secondary gain. i have heard people recommended st johns wort as a common herbal remedy for depression but like all herbal medications, its benefits are not supported by the FDA. hope this helps"

Snacky replied: "Herbal supplements that may help, but differently than prescription drugs, are St. John's Wort, Kava Kava, and SAM-E, among others. Visit a health food store, they'll be able to point you in the right direction."

jacko replied: "See pages 2, 8, and 6, at re the wort, etc."

HachiMachi replied: "Well, the answer will have to be a resounding no. I have been on depression/anxiety meds going on, oh, 12 years now. If there was a gentler alternative, like an herbal supplement, believe me I would take it. And I think others would too. However, for those of us who are taking depression meds, those types of drugs are what can help us. My therapist told me that the Vitamin B complex is good for energy level, if your depression manifests itself in decreased energy (which mine can). I started taking the Vitamin B complex and it did seem to help with my overall energy level. My grandmother (who is 83) was having the same problem and I told her about them and she is taking them and noticing it too. Sorry i got off on a tangent, but hope it was helpful. p.s gaining weight on meds varies from person to person (I have been on lots and never have gained weight). However, on Prozac I had to stop taking it because I was getting dangerously skinny from it."

What is the best way to withdraw from Zoloft? I am currently taking Zoloft for anxiety and OCD. I am having bad side effects from the medication and will need to stop taking it. I have only taken zoloft 50 mg for one month. My doctor says just stop taking it since it's only been 4 weeks. Has anyone else stopped suddenly like that even if only on it for 4 weeks? If so, did it make you sick with withdrawal symptoms. Also, does anyone know of some kind of herbal tea that might help with anxiety?

mnvikes8484 replied: "some people have problems cutting it cold turkey, others dont. 4 weeks is plenty of time to get tolerance and have withdrawl symptoms though. calling your pharmacist and getting a second opinion wouldnt be a bad idea. otherwise, i guess just do what the doctor says and if youre having problems than talk to him or your pharmacist about tapering off"

rojoe_58 replied: "I've never suffered from Anxiety but,,if I were you I wouldn't stop taking the meds all at once,,,do it gradually"

thematrixhazu36 replied: "If that's what the doctor said you should be fine but you can contact your pharmacist to verify that. I stopped taking it abruptly without complications. chamomile tea is what is suggested. I take St. Johns Wort Pills found over the counter and that seems to help me."

Brianna B replied: "I stopped taking it cold turkey with no symptoms. If you are looking for an herbal supplement, try St. John's Wort. Also believe it or not, exercise helped me a lot. Both cardio/strength training, and breathing exercises."

Buzz s replied: "I haven't taken the medicine, but others have. They needed to get off it slowly. Check with a health food store and see if chamomile tea would work for you."

Twigless replied: "There should be no withdrawal symptoms. I've taken it for about 3-4 weeks and stopped with no side effects whatsoever. Yogi brand teas are delicious and they have one with Kava-Kava in it that I drink on occasion. You might want to try it. Sleepytime Teas also has one with Valerian root that is good for bedtime."

erca990 replied: "you shouldn't withdraw from zoloft without the help of your doctor. Sometimes dangerous o can occur for some people But i would reccomend waiting another 2 -3 weeks because it take 5-7 to really take effect on a person. If after 5 or 7 weeks you still feel crumby then talk to your doctor and tell him this isn't right for you. It should not be that hard to get off of the zoloft because your body would not be on it for a long period of time. Its important that you don't just all of a sudden stop taking it, this lowers your blood level a lot causing dizzy spells and even more anxiety. It must be done gradually. Decreasing little by little."

Anyone with successful treatment with St. John's Wort (herbal supplement) + any opinions on low-dose Zoloft? I would like to take it as an alternative to Zoloft. I think the problem with Zoloft is that the medical dosages (25-200mg) releases too much and overcompensates or even floods the brain with serotonin, even though serotonin is considered the "calming" and "happy" neurochemical, dopamine is considered the "pleasure" and "motivational" neurochemical, inducing euphoria and energy and euphoria in high acute amounts. Therefore higher than needed amounts of Zoloft will induce severe sexual dysfuction and apathy, I know from experience, I've been on as much as 100mg, which induced severe aphathy, 50mg and less induced severe sexual dysfuction. I'm thinking, what the hell, perhaps someone with MDD and OCD does have a lack of serotonin in their brain, but perhaps we can bring it up to NORMAL instead over doing it or FLOODING the brain, that is how scientists have set up to be, I'd be interested in trying 1-4mg, but it would be hard to cut down a dose that small, perhaps a quarter of a 25mg pill.. tough to break down, but meh. Opinions?

Chris replied: "nope"

mommyslilallstar replied: "when i took zoloft i lost a whole bunch a weight on it bc it made me never hungry"

michelle c replied: "First of all, Zoloft doesn't "flood" your brain with serotonin, it does not affect how much serotonin is made or released. Zoloft works by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin from the transmitting neuron (hence the drug class SSRI- Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors). Zoloft does not induce sexual dysfunction or apathy in all patients, regardless of dosage. If you are experiencing these side effects, switching to a different SSRI (Paxil, Celexa, etc) or even an SNRI (Cymbalta etc) could be a strategy. If you really want to try a very low dose of the Zoloft you could opt for the liquid, so you would not have to worry about cutting a tablet. Additionally, if you have been diagnosed with MDD and OCD, St Johns Wort is probably not a good choice for you. It has only been shown effective in mild to moderate depression, and the results are still conflicting. It also has many drug-drug interactions, so make sure to discuss it with your physician if you decide to try it."

Is there homeopathic/herbal medicine that has effects comparable to a prescription antidressant? Side effects? I am personally against taking xanex, zoloft (if that's even an antidepressant) or any other prescription medication for depression. (Family history of dependance on such pills) I always try to take the herbal route with medications, so I am curious if anyone knows of any such herbal alternatives, and if so, the side effects to expect? I need something that will be especially helpful during PMS, but also help me when I don't have PMS, as I am prone to bouts of depression at various times, but it is especially intense during PMS. I don't have medical insurance at the moment, so seeing a doctor is out of the question. Please help. I am getting to be where I am scared of PMS because of how my mind works.

mlgable replied: "You can take St. Johns Wort. Look it up on the web."

nodoc replied: "St. John's Wort has probably the most good evidence for efficacy in treating depression. However it also has side effects. Talk to your doctor."

Violet Pearl replied: "Your diet is the easiest way to control your body (Garbage in, garbage out). High sugar/carb diets cause blood sugars to surge and crash, which can make you feel moody, depressed. Hormone imbalances can also cause severe PMS. All natural progesterone can help with PMS, and you can get it at places like Walgreens"

JustMe replied: "I suggest trying all natural Moodlift Complex. It supports feelings of well-being by using a blend of complimentary herbs: St. John's Wort, Inositol, Eleutherococcus Senticosus, and Green Oats. It may take a few weeks to actually start seeing results so be patient and it has no side effects. Hope this is useful and feel free to contact me with questions."

ladybug replied: "YES!!!! I used to be on Zoloft, Wellbutrin, and the worst for me was Effexor...I came off it several years ago wanting an herbal equivalent, like you. I was wanting SAMe because I didn't like what I heard or read about St. John's Wort. SAMe was more expensive. I am on Mood Elevator...a product by Nature's Sunshine. They have two...I am on the concentrated one that you only take 2 in the morning. It was in my system and I was feeling better by day 2. I HAVE NO SIDE EFFECTS!!!! Check your local herb store, vitamin places... some carry it...or you can buy online."

KatyZo replied: "The other answers are good but there is something else that really works...exercise. Like anything else, it doesn't happen overnight but give it a while and you should see a difference. In order for it to work, you must be dedicated and consistent. In the study I listed as my source, participants in the exercise-only group experienced more positive results that the group on antidepressants AND even the group on antidepressants and exercise."

accebs replied: "I have a history of depression and in the past have tried St johns wort, seemed to help with very mild symptoms for the first month or so but didnt do anything when i hit a rough spot . I got Rhodiolla (not sure of spelling) from the health food shop they are made by Solgar. Excellent you take between 1 - 3 pills each day, i just take 1 most days and then 2 or 3 if my mood starts to drop. Try them. x"

Side effects of going off zoloft? I take sertraline (generic term for Zoloft) to treat depression. But I've been out of town lately, have mislaid my bottle somewhere in my travels, and can't get a refill for a few days. I'm now experiencing some side effects from suddenly going off medication, including light-headedness, tingling in an arm and leg, mild nausea, no appetite, hard to concentrate. Is there an over-the-counter, herbal, food or drink or something that can help me get througy this?

LadyLynn replied: "You cannot quit Zoloft cold turkey! Call your 24-hour nurse right now and have her call in some for you right now. Your side effects are only gonna get worse. Go to your "Quick Care" (or whatever) NOW. Or else go to the ER. At least call a 24-hour pharmacy (hopefully yours is) and tell them what's going on. Pharmacists are really smart and helpful. Hopefully they'll give you a few to get you by. You have to get off of zoloft VERY gradually. If you have any Prozac, Paxil, Celexa or Effexor in the house, TAKE IT. It's fine to switch from one to another, because they're all basically the same. Bless you and good luck! :) Lynn"

is there an herbal supplement that will make me a happier person? i've been in such a bad mood lately. every little thing sets me off, i would like to be a little bit happier, i don't believe in medicine like zoloft and all that crap. this girl a long time ago told me about some herb....something that meant "woman of 1000 husbands" or something like that. Any suggestions.

Bee replied: "The herb your referring to is called Shatavari or Asparagus Racemosus. Asparagus racemosus root is regarded in Ayurveda as an aphrodisiac and a female reproductive tonic with a rejuvenative action. Shatavari is traditionally said 'to give the capacity to have a hundred husbands'. In addition to promoting conception it has been used for the treatment of menopause. It is an effective demulcent for dry and inflamed membranes of the lungs, stomach, kidney and sexual organs, hence it may be of benefit for the treatment of vaginal dryness in menopause. So unless your going through menopause, wanting to concieve or are perimenopausal, Shatavari is not really indicated for your condition. A stimulating nervine such as St Johns Wort would be great for you, it is specific for low energy states, lethargy and depression. St Johns is also a functional nervine too, which helps to repair actual nerve damage or weakness. Hope this helps, you can get supplements in your health food or vitamin store. It will take up to 6 weeks till you feel a difference."

Brandon S replied: "Use Omega 3"

esseltes replied: "If you feel down try taking Omega-3, DHA, and B12 vitamin supplements they will help your mood but take a while. Turmeric, a spice, also helps with mood. The fastest way to get out of a slump is to do some taxing physical exercise (ie. sprint down the street as fast as you can until you can't hardly breathe). Your body releases endorphins when you exercise - so you get a natural high. Its really hard to get out and make yourself exercise but if you can just get out and go for a walk, or simply run home from the car, it will do wonders!"

littleshrieker replied: "you can try taking these: shatavari or Asparagus racemosu in indian means "she who has a thousand husbands", you can take the liquid form because it is usually is very effective or you can look for the capsule form in the same website, they have a lot of selection. what's great about iHerb is you can get $5 off your first order and shipping can be as low as $1.98, try it you might like. the coupon code is : FAR177 hope this helps..."

erchnic replied: "Have you identified the source of your bad mood? That's the first step. The other is to know that we all go through periods of "bad moods". It is a chance to grow. I was going to tell you that you are responsible for your own happiness, without pills/herbal supplements. Go for a walk alone, and figure it out what can you do to change your life. Oh, yeah, chocolate works for me most of the time, temporarily."

can i use fetril aid and zoloft? I have been trying for over a year and nothing is working. I logged onto babycenter and found a herbal supplement called FertilAid. I am currently on Zoloft as well. I can not find out if there will be a drug interaction. If you know PLEASE let me know before I order it. Thanks everyone!

justwondering replied: "Research hormones. I think you are looking in the wrong direction for your cure. When your hormones are out of whack you get all sorts of symptoms and depression and infertility are on the list. Check out Suzanne Somers book "Ageless"for some information. The charts I was looking at for hormone imbalances were found in the book "What your doctor may not tell you about breast cancer" which has great information for more than just cancer patients. Good luck"

What are other natural herbal supplements for mod/mild depression, other than St.Johns Wort? And,that are not $50-$100 a bottle..St.Johns is like $15 for roughly 200-300 caplets I don't want to use any antidepressants that are prescribed, like Cymbalta or Zoloft.. I've researched Licorice supplements and 5thp. Any ideas, and Personal experience with them please?

Redsi replied: "Here i s an excellent site with some wonderful options for you. It will definitely help you. Have a look."

If the herbal supplement 5-HTP works, then why do we even use SSRIs anymore? You can get 5-HTP from drugstores for about $18 and everyone knows how well it works. It's completely natural, causes no side effects, and increases serotonin. Why are we still treating depression with Zoloft and other expensive medicine that has side effects?

travis2500 replied: "Smoke signals work, but I prefer the Internet. 5-HTP doesn't benefit everyone, and it's always better to have many options rather than fewer."

tiebuster2 replied: "Marketing is one big one... doctors and drug companies tell you taht supplements won't work, so you don't buy them"

oldtimekid2 replied: "Tiebuste is kind of right, but not for that reason. The long answer is a bit more than that, though. Supplements work by giving your body nutrition it's otherwise lacking to help your body do what it needs to do. In the case of 5-HTP, it gives your body the raw materials it needs to make Serotonin, which helps for mood and sleep among other things... but if your body doesn't need the Serotonin (or 5-HTP) as much, it might not make as much as a person may want it to make. Drugs on the other hand force a reaction that your body may not need/want or it prevents a natural process in the body (which is why there is commonly such a long list of side effects). In this case, the SSRIs prevent your body from "re-uptaking" the Serotonin (processing it back into your body, so it stays in longer than it's supposed to). The main "benefit" of drugs is that because they force a specific reaction, you'll get that reaction, but with supplements, you might not get any of the desired reaction if you don't need the nutrients. That's why people still take SSRIs if they don't want to worry about if they'll get that reaction or not... although some take it because they don't know of any other options and most doctors don't suggest natural options. I hope I helped!"

Az R replied: "Actually it doesn't work spectacularly. Mediocre at best. There's only a threshold to which your body will convert it to serotonin. Beyond that, it just dumps the stuff, or burns it for energy. Also, the actual neurotransmitters(eg Serotonin) are more and more being considered a relatively minor part of depression, and more complicated areas involving neurotrophic factors, cell proliferation, survival, growth, and gene expression are now being looked at a lot more seriously. Primarily because not even five years ago the tools to look at these didn't exist."
