Does anyone know if 2.5mg glyburide compare to 5mg of glypizide. Thank you? We were just switched to a different insurance and they changed several of my medications saying they were all comparable to the ones I've been taking. I am worried about the incresase in the mg between 2.5mg glyburide to 5mg of glypizide.

Yaybob replied: "The study at suggests that it takes twice as much glipizide as glyburide to get an equivalent effect, just as you have described it: "The mean final daily dose of glyburide (15.4 +/- 1.6 mg) was markedly lower than that of glipizide (29.7 +/- 3.1 mg). Thus, in this patient population, glyburide was twice as potent on a weight basis than glipizide." 15 mg of glyburide was equal to about 30 mg of glipizide If the 5mg of glipizide happens to be too much for you, you will experience hypoglycemia (glucose under 60 or 70 with associated hunger, heavy heartbeats and sweating, all relieved by eating). If this happens, just miss a dose and notify your physician, who will probably advise you to restart the glipizide at half strength (2.5mg by cutting the pill)."

Kelly M replied: "Great info from Dr. Yaybob. I would like to add that if you have run out of your medication and are trying to get by by taking someone else's medication that was not prescribed for you, then you may want to give your doctor a quick call and let him know. Don't be embarrassed, just explain what is going on. He or she may want to give you some samples to get you by until you can get yours refilled. Don't know if this applies to you but just in case...It is a good rule of thumb!"

My wife took 2.5mg glyburide? Pregancy Diabetes? She feels drowsy a lot; her sugar levels are much lower than what she had before (in 80 to 100 range even after meals). I am breaking the 2.5mg into half and giving it to her. I have heard that sometimes the medicine stimulates the pancreas to restart generating the insulin and one could stop taking the medication. Is that true that if she stops the medication the sugar levels mightbe good again. She was borderline to start with.

merrygirl replied: "You shouldn't be changing doses of meds without speaking with a doctor. Is this even her meds? Don't screw around with a pregnant women don't play doctor"

TM replied: "80-100 1 hour after meals are excellent range. My Endocrinolgist and my OB told me to keep it below 140 1 hour after meals. The lower numbers are the better they are for the baby. I am a preexisting diabetic. I wouldn't let her stop taking the medication with out consulting her OB or Endocrinologist. If her numbers were higher before she may not be used to having lower numbers and could make her feel tired, her body will start adjusting to everything being lower."
