Is it okay to take amoxicillin capsules 500mg with Sudafed Decongestants? I got a chest infection combined with a blocked up nose. I have been prescribed Amoxicillin Capsules for my chest but I still have a blocked nose....Can I take these together? As I would like to be able to breath through my nose!

Rita S replied: "This would be a very good question for your pharmacist. You have not mentioned any other medical conditions, but often Sudafed cannot be taken with other conditions. As for the nasal congestion, maybe a vaporizer would help. Any time you can treat a symptom without additional medication, you will be better off. Good Luck and I hope you feel better soon."

Is it okay to take sudafed PM and 250mg amoxicillin with in the same hour? I have a sinus infection, and i am still really conjested, and would really love to be able to sleep tonight. Is it okay to take both?

Jake replied: "yes... as long as you drink a couple beers with it"

sharkgirl replied: "Ring up a pharmacy and check. There is lots of stuff you can't take if you are already taking antibiotics"

kokochin01 replied: "Yes, one is an antibiotic & the other is an antihistamine. They are often taken together. The only problem would be if you have had a reaction to one or the other or if the amoxicillin was not prescribed for you."

LDB_Career replied: "I would recommend calling your pharmacy and asking them. I am not a doctor, but from my personal experience, Amoxicillin is a antibiotic and Sudafed PM is antihistimine, so there shouldn't be any interaction. I think it's fine. But again, don't take my word for it. Post again (edit your question) tomorrow morning, so that we can all see that you made it through the night. If you don't post, we'll assume that it wasn't such a good idea to combine those 2 meds. :)"

tmahurin22 replied: "Its OK to take together. They work differently. The PM part of sudafed is actually benadryl and it will make you sleepy. No driving after you take it though. And no alcohol with it either."

Can i take Amoxicillin and Sudafed PE together? i am sick as can be nothing is working i cant breath, my ears hurt, i feel like my eyes are closed all the time, and freeeezzzzzingg

Ron replied: "There are no known interactions between amoxicillin and sudafed PE. They are OK to be taken together"

jamus d woespuss replied: "but be aware that amoxicillin can reduce/negate the effects of oral contraceptives (pill) rather take sudafed (not PE) which is pseudoephedrine and is far more effective that the phenylephrine in th PE it is OTC but you have to ask the pharmacist and show ID thanks to an overactive government and meths labs etofylline (i don't know its legal status in USA) is a very effective bronchodilator plus if sudafed is not sufficient and use aspirin 500mg with food every 4 hours (as long as you have no heartburn, ulcers, sensitive kidneys etc) miracle drug but not very profitable so they push acetominophen"

When taking Tylenol 3, can I take any other drugs at the same time (such as sudafed)? I had surgery yesterday, and am on Tylenol 3 and amoxicillin. I have a really sore throat and was hoping to take some sudafed or something at the same time. Is this allowed?

terry g replied: "You should call your pharmacist first and tell them everything you are taking, and which over the counter medsyou want to use. They will know better than anyone what the drug interactions are."

gw7772000 replied: "If you had surgery under general anesthesia, your throat is probably sore due to the tube they put in your throat after they put you "under". Many people don't realize that when they have surgery, they get a tube put in their throat, mostly as a safety precaution in case something goes wrong during surgery. This tube, or the removal of the tube before you wake up, can cause an intensely sore throat. My son has had surgery under general anesthesia three times, complained of a very sore throat every single time after surgery. The sudafed probably won't help you (although it probably won't hurt you either, if you take it with your pain med and antibiotic. Try some Chloraseptic spray, or something else that numbs the throat."

iraq51 replied: "Sudafed isn't indicated for a sore throat. Call your pharmacist for an effective medication."

SusiQ replied: "You wouldn't take Sudafed for a sore throat. Your throat is probably sore because they put a tube down your throat so you could breath during surgery. I'd call the pharmacy and ask the pharmacist, what you could take that would be o..k."

ammitlurker replied: "The reason you have a sore throat is if you had general anesthesia for your surgery yesterday, you were most likely intubated (had a tube put down your throat for the general anesthesia) - but then, you don't specify if you are sick or just have a sore throat only. I've had many surgeries and found that sore throat lozenges or the spray work fine. Intubation really is harsh on the throat, which is why it hurts so much today. The sore throat should only last about 2-3 days at the most Sudafed is really for stuffy noses. I wish you a nice recovery and hope it's not to difficult on you - good luck!"

Snowhiker replied: "I would call my doctor to make sure. The tylenol can make you sleepy and dizzy. Sudafed can make you dizzy also. The antibiotic will help with the sore throat. Good Luck with your recovery!"

Sharie replied: "I would not take any other drugs with tylenol 3 without first asking your pharmacist first. They are the best at drug interactions and personally I would not chance a bad drug reaction without first consulting a pharmacist."

Kris Kelly replied: "I'm an RN at an ER. Tylenol 3 is a very mild drug. When taken with Sudafed the only thing that would happen is it would make you a bit more tired. If you are a smoker, the tube put down your throat during surgery causes even more pain that a non-smoker. So in a nut-shell it is fine to take together. If you don't want to be so sluggish, take them about 2 hour apart from one another. That is what we do at the Hospital. Feel Better."

8wks pregnant with bad cough and congestion? What did you take? My Dr said I could use Robitussin DM or Sudafed? Does anyone know about amoxicillin? I did call the Dr! That is why I said MY DR SAID.....

7wks & Due 09/12/09 replied: "I am about 7wks along and my dentist prescribed me amoxicillin certain anibiotics are ok and as long as the doctor who prescribed it knows you are pregnant your good I hope you feel better"

da_zoo_keeper replied: "How about a trip to the doctor's office?"

<3Xavier is due June 4th<3 replied: "dont take robitusin DM you have to take plain robitusin..nothing with letters..at least thats what i was told i wen i had the flu at about 10 weeks..same with tylenol, no extra strength or nighttime jus regular tylenol..."

mete replied: "you should go with your doctors prescription in stead of what others say"

Lucielou replied: "Hey, when I was about 25 weeks I had a really bad thoat infection, and went to doctors, they prescribed me Amoxicillin. I would ask the doctor huni to perscribe you it. Rather than just telling you what you could use!!! I also used an Olbas Oil nasal inhailer as I couldnt breathe properly. lol. xx"

Princess Nicki replied: "OMG! I am 6 weeks pregnant and I have really really bad cough and congestion also! I just went to the doctor on SAT and she gave me a prescription for Amocillin she said it is the only antibiotic that is safe to use in pregnancy. So you see your doctor and get a prescription and feel better!! :-) And congrats!!"

Are there any known interactions between Ketamine and Amoxicillin in humans? How about Amoxicillin + ketamine + sudafed? thanks

TKS replied: "I would not mix ketamine and sudafed."

How do I get rid of a sinus infection that I've had for almost 2 weeks? I've tried everything. I tried antibiotics (amoxicillin, omniceff, and bactrim.) I've tried other medications (prednizone, flonase spray, sudafed, claritin....) I've tried holding my face over boiling water and hot towels. I've tried saline nose spray and also a neti pot. Please help! I'm miserable and am getting married in two weeks. I'm so scared I'm not gonna be able to get rid of this.

Glossy Lips replied: "have you tried contacting your doctor and letting him/her know you are not getting any relief? I usually try over the counter Benadry sinus which usually helps (I have had ongoing sinus issues for years) but it sounds like what you have is more severe.. good luck and congrats"

Shortstuff13 replied: "As a chronic Sinusitis sufferer myself, I highly recommend that you see your doctor again, ASAP!!!! I have to go take Sudafed Sinus tablets, often, to get rid of the very painful headaches. I get the box that has the pinkish tablets in it, because the red tablets don't help. Many of the meds my doctor prescribed for me, didn't work at all. Feel better soon & congrats on your upcoming marriage."

I went to the Doctor and I have fluid behind both my ears, he prescribed me Amoxicillin, its been 5 days and.. Its been 5 days and I still feel like I'm under water, I cant hear good my ears are clogged, I bought Sudafed PE "Nasal Decongestant" should I not take the two together and just stick to the antibiotic??? How long does it usually take for this ear problem to go away?? Its driving me crazy!

Tif replied: "I went through that last year, it went on forever! Even after I had taken all my antibiotics the doc said they were fine, just a lot of congestion. I also worked with several people that had the same problem or (or someone in their family was dealing with it.) Try the Sudafed with it, hopefully it will help. I know it's awful, it drove me insane! Good luck!"

dasher replied: "if it has been 5 days and you are not improved please call your dr to tell him. you should have soon improvement after 5 days."

SvelteMom replied: "I had something like this once or twice. It can be a pain to deal with. If you don't have a fever and the pain is not getting worse, most likely it's not a problem. However, if you are at all worried, be sure to contact the doctor. Sometimes it takes a while for the fluid in the ears to go away. It doesn;t mean that you are not improving....it just may mean that it is taking more time than you would like. You can try the Sudafed by mouth to see if it helps, too. Be sure to finish all of the Amoxicillin too. Again, if it seems that things are not going the way you think they should, don;t hesitate to contact your doctor. Hope this helps From a pharmacist"

My right ear! I can't hear anything in my right ear! What should I Do? I'm taking sudafed, Ibuprofen and amoxicillin. I have a stuffy nose, ruff coft, and my right ears infected. Does anyone know a better way I can treat my sickness? I wouldn't have all those medications if I didn't see the docter christena

tdmc72 replied: "the amoxicillin may not be strong enuf. talk to your doctor about it."

leahtmontoya replied: "The antibiotics should be working to get rid of your ear infection. If you're losing your hearing, then you need to get to the E.R. immediately so you can possibly get your hearing restored, and maybe get a stronger dose of meds."

Christina replied: "Go see a doctor.."

valducci53 replied: "How long have you been taking the medication? It takes about three days for it to kick in. If it's been longer than that and your infected ear is giving you allot of pain you should go to the emergency room. A badly infected ear that is not taken care of could cause damage to your eardrum. GO."

Snogood replied: "What?"

TeriR replied: "Have you been taking the amoxicillin long enough for it to work? If you've been taking it for several days with no improvement, you need to call your doctor to see about different meds. If you just started taking it, you need to give it some time."

justmedrt replied: "Better see a Dr. a.s.a.p."

disorder74 replied: "Flush the ear out with a 50% Peroxide 50% warm water solution then have someone preferabley a doctor look in it with an Otoscope. You may have a punctured ear drum."

zuri replied: "The amoxicillin might not be strong enough. An ER visit might not be warranted unless you really are losing hearing. But, get with your doc ASAP becuase the bug you have may need a stronger antibiotic to kill it. A doc can also prescribe a decongestant to help with the clogged nose and stuffed up ears. Once, a doc gave me the medrol pack because the sinus infection was so bad. To help you feel better while you wait on your meds and body to heal, you can drink hot liquids, use steam, etc. to clear your sinus tracts. If your cough hurts, talk with the pharmacist and get some cough syrup to soothe your symptoms. When you cal your doc, tell of your temp and if you cough up mucus, what color it is. Take care and good luck"

heart o' gold replied: "If you've seen a doctor and gotten meds recently you need to be patient and let the meds work. Stay in bed and stay warm. Sinus issues often affect hearing, so if you have just started medicating the ear and you aren't in great pain from it give the meds a chance to kick in. If you've been on meds for a while, and your ear is really bothering you, you should go back to the doc. If this is a cold or flu, my favorite 'remedy' follows. This is not a cure, it's a treatment for symptoms that will help you feel better. 8 oz. hot water Juice of 1 lemon 1TB honey (or to taste) 1 ts to 1 oz. brandy, depending on time of day and other meds. tiny pinch cayenne (optional) The water warms and relaxes you. The lemon provides vit. c and helps with sinus issues. The honey coats your throat and provides micronutrients. The brandy warms and relaxes you. The cayenne helps heat up your system. After three, if you don't feel better, you don't care. OK for kids without the brandy."

I have been coughing since March. Why? Pease help.? I had a really bad cold in March of this year when I lived at school (dorm room) and as usual, figured it would go away. It hasn't, and I am home, in a different environment, experiencing the same symptoms: runny nose, mucus in my throat, persistent productive cough. I went to my doctor and have tried Allegra, Nasonex, Amoxicillin, Sudafed, Claritin, and Amoxiclav, and nothing has worked. Since the amoxicillin, my lungs feel as though they are "bubbling" with something when I breathe (not all the time, usually in the afternoon) and my symptoms are better in the morning and at night, and horrible in the afternoon. I have doubts that the Amoxiclav is going to work, and have doubts that my doctor knows what he is doing. Can anyone tell me what I might have? Or how to treat it? I'm not in pain, just annoyed and want it to go away. I am not a smoker in any form. I have never had a fever, and my school is in Ohio, and I live on Lake Erie in PA. The environment is rather humid in both places. I have never had allergies, chest pain, or a cough lasting this long. :(

USMC Pvt. replied: "law off the weed. juss jokin. prolly just a jean"

cashmoney replied: "maybe its a loooong fever of cold or flu or wutever"

summer replied: "You might have really bad bronchitis, it never seems to go away, i know how you feel...or maybe a allergy...or somethings in ur house....? maybe its too dry in the enviroment your in?"

AirKroll replied: "well a couple of years ago i coughed for bout a month and it was bronchidus. could be for you."

HMF313 replied: "I was going to say it sounds like allergies, but I think you tried enough decongestants to rule that out. If it's been this long and your doctor hasn't figured out what it is yet I'd recommend getting a second opinion."

the crusader replied: "Have your doctor give you a chest X-ray. He'll then be able to check to make sure that you don't have anything seriously wrong. If you don't have a fever, then I doubt that it's an infection. Because it's lasted so long, it sounds to me like you've got allergies. If your lungs are clear of infection (and cancer), then ask your doctor for a prescription for Singulair. It's a different kind of allergy med. Just remember, not all allergy sufferers get relief. Good luck."

mlb33 replied: "I wish I could help you more than this, but I would go see another Dr. It really does sound like your current one doesn't have a clue. Good luck!"

gregory_dittman replied: "It sounds like allegies, but check for walking Pneumonia and Tuberculosis."

peaches replied: "Go get a TB test as soon as you can."

Big Time Yankees Fan replied: "A doctor should tell you that this is not a cold, but allergies. Any cough that lasts more than a few days is usually allergies. I had this a couple of years ago & could not get rid of it. Then a friend of mine gave me an old remedy that helped me, & now everytine that I have a lingering cough I use it. If you have anise seed boil in water for 5-10 minutes. Strain the seed & drink the water which has become a tea. Add sugar til you get the taste that you like. If you don't have anise seed or can't find it you can always use the liquid, which I hear tastes like licorice."

jesteele1948 replied: "Get another doctor. Think back to what you might have been exposed to that caused the first symptoms. If there was anything significant: new house, new office, new neighborhood, new houseplant, some change in the stuff in the air you're exposed to, like someone's cigarette smoke, new pillow on the bed, new fabric softener, change in your detergent, new person in the house ... try to connect the severity of and changes in the symptoms to that exposure. A person's perfume or carpet glue can set off breathing problems. A failure of your vacuum to work anymore could have you breathing bad stuff. Make sure you tell the dr. all the details (that you wrote in your Q). If s/he stops you before you tell her/him of the duration, the mucus, the changes of symptoms over a day's time, s/he's not listening: get another doctor who listens. ASK FOR an analysis of the mucus for germs/ bacteria/ viruses. That may cost money. Too many doctors write a prescription because it will usually do away with symptoms, but it doesn't attack the cause. This is obviously NOT GOOD. Finding causes takes longer. When I was 18 and went to a rural college after living with a smoking mother and a shedding cat for years, I coughed for 3 months. That's how long it took for my lungs to empty out the crap that had collected from those two irritants. I did not see a doctor because I suspected I was getting better. I hope you find your CURE faster."

J P replied: "You need to go to a specialist, you may also need to get some xrays of your lungs-this sounds serious-please don't ignore it-get to a specialist asap. Take care!"

dEniSe replied: "Upon reading your question the only disease that I can think is chronic brochitis. I am a physical therapist and I was able to handle patients who have this kind of symptoms. You see, chronic bronchitis is a type of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with brochial irritation, increased secretions and a productive cough lasting atleast 3 months for 2 consecutive years. If you have doubts about your doctor's diagnosis, you have a choice to seek for a second opinion."

RHENE replied: "Ur problem looks like pneumonia and allergy existing together. Change antibiotics to cefuroxime. Depending on how big U are, take 250 or 500 mg twice a day for 7 days. can U buy it without prescription? Amoxyclav is just a variation of amoxycillin. Try taking water this way: Add sea salt to 1 quart of water. Depending on ur size too, take 16-24 ounces of this salted water upon waking up in the morning and at bedtime, 8-16 ounces half hr before meals and also 2 and a half hrs after meals. Replace ur urine with another 8 ounces. Avoid coffee, tea, sodas, chocolates and sweets, alcoholic beverages. If U have access to it. Take 350 mg of magnesium daily in 2 divided doses and also 1000 mg of vitamin C. Proper hydration will facilitate the clearing of ur lungs of the phlegm and will also correct ur allergies if they are present."

thatweirdone replied: "You may have phuemonia, you really need to get chest x-rays and go to the doctor."

Regina replied: "You have asthma!"

gofish replied: "just give it time ."

Debbie V replied: "You're right, regular MDs don't always know what they're doing when it comes to specialized areas of medicine. You wouldn't let your MD deliver your baby, would you? You shouldn't let an MD work on your lungs. They've already tried everything they know, and you're still sick. Go see a specialist--a pulmonologist. Best wishes."

Gipper replied: "If you are just spinning your wheels with a regular medical doctor; have him send you to a pulmonary specialist like now. They have different tests, scans, etc. that regular medical doctors don't do. Maybe you need breathing treatments to clear your lungs. Mucus in your throat is probably due to sinusitis; however, the sinuses and lungs are combined when it comes to upper respiratory illnesses. You don't have to be in pain to have a serious, but hopefully treatable, lung disease."

LONG-JOHN replied: "PROLONGED 3 month COUGH "SPELL"----TIME TO SEE YOUR Mister,or Ms., M.D.---time was a long time ago!!!!"

Dawn J replied: "It can either be allergies due to bronchial or post-nasal drip, for post-nasal drip it is a quick and easy way to treat it at home with "salinex" or a mixture of water and salt, spray nasal cavity 3-4 times a day, you should feel relief immediately, bronchitis is a little different, are you using a pump? Seems the doctor should have sent you for chest x-ray to see if there is something there. I'd suggest going to a clinic or hospital and get checked properly, they'll know how to treat it and rule out any other problems....hope you feel better soon!"

Zachary330 replied: "Bronchitis is an illness in which you may cough uncontrollably. You may cough so hard that you throw up. It can last for weeks and weeks. Do you have chest pains? Shortness of breath? Go to a doctor and find out what's really causing it. Excerpt from wikipedia: Signs and symptoms Bronchitis may be indicated by an expectorating cough, shortness of breath (dyspnea) and wheezing and occasionally chest pains, fever, and fatigue or malaise. Sputum characteristics do not correspond with a particular etiology (ie, viral vs bacterial)... Go to wikipedia.org for more on bronchitis. Feel better! :)"
