Is it ok to take cetirizine (an antihistamine) for sleep? I heard taking diphenhydramine for sleep and its ok, but I can't buy it outta here. Got only cetirizine. Both are H1 antihistamines but diphenhydramine seem to have shorter half-life time, and well, they are kinda diffirent, so I dunno... Also curious about the dosage, thanks. :) [And dont advice me going to doctor or natural remedies.]

D k replied: "Histamine H1 receptors are activated by endogenous histamine, which is released by neurons that have their cell bodies in the tuberomamillary nucleus of the hypothalamus. The histaminergic neurons of the tuberomammillary nucleus become active during the 'wake' cycle, firing at approximately 2 Hz; during slow wave sleep; this firing rate drops to approximately 0.5 Hz. Finally, during REM sleep, histaminergic neurons stop firing altogether. It has been reported that histaminergic neurons have the most wake-selective firing pattern of all known neuronal types. this is NOT ok to take .......this disturbing your frequency to sleep, and the reducing sleep time is not offering you good health, and you will not feel good any type of work.and i'll recommend you also say bye bye to cetirizine.."

Simon W replied: "Cetirizine is not sedating so it wont help, Promethazine is sedating but has a long half life so you will feel tired the next day, Chlorphenamine is slightly sedating."

is cetirizine (allergy relief)safe for dogs? my dog has been diagnosed as aving a allergy that seems to come along when it gets hot obviopusly i would never give him anything without asking the vet first but i wondered if the vet is likely to laugh at me when i say that i take one citirizine tablet a day for my own allergy do you think it would be safe for my dog to do the same he is a five stone 11 year old german shepard cross thank you for your help xxx the medicine that the vet reccomends is one hundred pounds a month for the prescription but i could buy cetirizine 28 tablets for four pounds i do have pet insurance but this is not covered on the insurance

pescalle2 replied: "I don't know if it's safe for dogs, but I don't think your vet will laugh at you. LOTS of people drugs are also used for pets, so it's not a stupid question. I work at a human pharmacy and we have several customers getting medication for their pets there, like for seizures and congestive heart failure. Lucky you that you can get cetirizine so cheap! When I got some last year, it was around $80 for 30 10mg tablets!"

Pat M replied: "£100 a month?? What a rip off !"

th3dogmomma replied: "I don't know if your vet will laugh at you or not. I doubt it, but he will probably strongly discourage giving it to your dog. I don't know for sure that it is toxic to dogs, but I have never heard of it being okay for dogs either. You can give your dog benedryl. Is the dog having a respiratory reaction or a skin allergy?"

Desmond replied: "Medicines for humans have not been licenced for use on animals. If you give your dog a cetirizine tablet it may overdose him or cause other problems that are not yet known. How do you even know the dog has an allergy? Take it to the vet and get him to diagnose what is wrong, you wont get accurate advice on this section. The vet needs to look at the dog personally."

Can you take both Clarityn and Zirtek together? Does anyone know if it's safe to take both of these antihistamines together (one tab of each)? (Generic names are Loratidine and Cetirizine - I always buy the generics). I not only have a cat allergy but the summer is increasing my hay fever symptoms too! Grateful for advice.

Rick S replied: "NO!"

Kayla replied: "These two drugs do about the same thing. Talking both would be like overdosing pretty much. Something with an antihistamine would work better (at night. Makes you sleepy). And perhaps psudephed with advil would work during the day. It helps congestion and headache."

why can you not buy from a pharmacy telfast/fexonfenadine? how does it differ to the other ones sold, like cetirizine, loratadine, and chlorphenamine etc does it have a poor safety profile, etc ?, in the uk

shushin replied: "They are both prescription only in the UK. The Telfast 180 are great wish I could get without a prescription."

wickedly_funny66 replied: "Guess it depends where you live.... In Australia telfast is sold over the counter as are all the allergy tablets."

Hannah. replied: "because it's stronger than other allergy tablets so doctors prefer to know who is taking it"

devilhue replied: "sadly its all to do with the EU regulation and licencing on drugs, that's why certain meds can be purchased over the counter abroad. how ever if you have more than 3monthly items from your GP its advisable to get a PPC (pre paid certificate). you can have as many prescription as you want as long as you have a valid card. available in monthly instalments.i have one and its saved me a fortune."

(UK) DAVE replied: "because they are up to 5 times stronger than normal antihistermimes"

What's the difference between 'hydrochloride' and 'dihydrochloride'? I've got 2 packs of antihistamine tablets (Glapharm hayfever and allergy relief) - the packet Ive been using are called 'cetirizine hydrochloride'. I bought a new pack to use, thinking they were the same but these new ones are called ' cetirizine dihydrochloride' - what's the difference & will it be ok for me to take the new pack?

tota replied: "the (DI)"

two2fly replied: "The difference is the level of Hyrdogen in the compound. I see no reason you can't use the other package."

bob shark replied: "It may be a new formulation, using 2 hydroclorides in the molecule instead of one, or maybe they are just being more specific about the chemical composition than in the past. Take as Directed"

Lorna replied: "Hi. Hydrochloride: a salt, esp. of an alkaloid, formed by the direct union of hydrochloric acid with an organic base that makes the organic constituent more soluble. Dihydrochloride: a hydrochloride containing two molecules of hydrochloric acid. So basically, dihydrochloride contains one extra molecule of hydrochloric acid, so they've probably worked out a better formula for allergies. Good luck! Lorna"

spencer s california replied: "I think that "DI" equals two Hydrochlorides :)"

TweetyBird replied: "The most obvious difference is one hydrogen molecule. It's fine to take them."

Eternal replied: "Host consciousness: In the context of this question the pharmaceuticals are bio-equivalent. Your body will not know this difference, so don't worry. In many cases it could make a difference - but not this one. To all intents and purposes they are the same."

Baboo replied: "Both medications are the same and you can safely take the new one. The hydrogen level in both medications is THE SAME. In chemical naming, alot of times the (DI) naming is excluded because it is understood - in chemistry the same number of hydrogen atoms would surround the chlorine atoms (so the manufacturer left it out in the original medication). It is wrong to say that the number of hydrogen atoms changed unless the entire compound changed and was called something entirely different."

cetirizine hydrochloride (zyrtec) from online pharmacy? hi...i used an online pharmacy to buy 180 10 mg cetirizine hydrochloride pills (generic zyrtec...for allergies)...normally they are oval but the ones that came in the mail are round and unmarked. they came packaged in little boxes labeled cetirizine hydrochloride and it has all the info on the boxes and also the bubble packs but ive never seen them round and unmarked before. i just want to make sure that i didnt get ripped off and that they are in fact 10 mg of cetirizine hydrochloride. any help is appreciated. thanks! i got a 6 month supply because i have very bad allergies and take one a day. when they went OTC, the price went up, which is why i don't get them in a drugstore. i used an online pharmacy once before with no problems but i used a different one this time and the pills do not look the same as they always have - round with no marking instead of oval with marking. also, online pharmacies are not illegal and i came on here for an answer to my question - because i am obviously concerned - not to read your unnecessary speculation on why i purchased a 6-month supply.

TheBarbequeMan replied: "You should NEEEEEVER use online pharmacy drugs. It is dangerous and illegal, and not smart. Drugs from online pharmacies come from GOD KNOWS where, and are quite often contaminated, and the drugs quite often have the wrong doses, or are not metered correctly, and are cut up with other drugs to intensify the strength. The fact that the drugs are not the right size, shape, markings indicates that it is COUNTERFEIT, which it is. Don`t take them! You may kill yourself. Plus, online pharmacies are illegal, and you could face trouble. EDIT: Guy below me - Thanks, meant to check the legality.. They aren`t illegal, but they are unsafe. Thanks, bud."

redstrat5 replied: "online pharmacies are not illegal as the FDA has no power over the internet, but they are extremely unsafe and the drugs they sell are usually either placebos, counterfeits, or drugs treating opposite diseases, all which can be harmful. many over the counter drugs are unmarked, but unmarked meds from an online pharmacy is a no no. i would never take a med from an online pharmacy. their are lists on the FDA website of legitimate online pharmacies and unlicensed ones. i would check that out. without an imprint (markings on the pill) i can not tell you what it is without chemically testing it. i would not take the pill"

Gonzo replied: "Generic medications are supposed to be marked with some sort of number for easy identification in case someone takes them not knowing what they are, get sick, and need medical attention (doctors can look them up in the Merck Manual or PDR to figure out what the pills are). Unmarked tablets are of concern and you should not risk your well being and safety by taking these pills. Who knows just what exactly they may be (some investigations have found that these pills are actually things like drywall, plaster, cement, among other things). Since Zyrtec is now OTC and generics are available, you should just head down to the nearest store and pick some up (although why you would need a 6 month supply of Zyrtec also arouses suspicion). Sorry to say but I think you've been had."

Why does sweat stain my white t-shirts pink? Oops, I did not mean to close that! When I have a hard jog I sweat a lot. My white t-shirt is soaked. When I take it out of the linen basket 3 days later to wash it, it is covered in bright pink blotches! Things that may be relevant: This doesn't always happen. The pink washes out with a bio-soak and a hot wash. I use non-bio liquitabs and an easy-iron conditioner. I use a 'no-white marks' deodorant. I take aciclovir for an eye condition; cetirizine for hay fever; salbutamol and beclomethasone for asthma. I often drink white wine the night before so there is probably alcohol in my sweat. I often eat spicy foods. The night before the last time, I ate spaghetti bolognese with some added chilli. I use sweeteners and lo-salt. This has only been happening since I bought a new simple reed linen basket with a full white linen lining. The t-shirt doesn't touch the basket, or anything red or pin

SAM I AMn't replied: "well sweat is slightly acidic, so that's probably what's causing the problem. i think if you use a stronger anti-perspirant and powder, it should stop the wettness"

eskie lover replied: "It is your body chemistry interacting with the deoderant and fiber content of the fabric. What you consume, whether it be food or medication, and use topically (i.e. deoderant) contributes to your individual body chemistry which will then reacts not only to the fabric, but anything it also contains (detergents, fabric softeners, etc.) You should consider yourself lucky that a bio-soak removes the stain, for some people more extensive effort is required."

Unusual rash? I have a nasty rash which is getting worse. The rash started on tops of both feet and around my ankles (all my searches for feet rashes come up with rashes on soles of feet). It has spread up my legs – but the spots get bigger. It is also on my arms – again the spots are bigger. They feel a lot larger than they look. They are quite raised but do not look like hives. The rash on my feet looks like a lot of small red raised dots. It is itchy but not intensely itchy except at night when it is worse. A fortnight ago I was out the back doing a bit of gardening and I sprayed some plants with bug spray – the rash appeared the same day. I have contacted the makers and they have assured me that their product would not have caused a reaction. I visited the doctor about five days later and showed him the rash on my foot. He seemed very disinterested. He prescribed a hydrocortisone cream. I have used it all to no affect. I have been taking Piriton – no difference. Today I bought Hayfever and Allergy Relieve (cetirizine hydrochloride) and took it before I went outside. I sat outside the back of my house in the sun for half an hour today and it got worse. Not long after I’d been sitting I began to cough and sneeze. In my garden I have lettuce growing, coriander and mint. I have some tomato plants in pots (that I re-potted yesterday and the day before and the rash didn’t worsen). I also have some flower pots with various plants eg daisies, marigolds etc.

openyourmynd replied: "sounds like you need to call your doctor and let him know the medicine isn't working and has spread...."

ladysinger replied: "Please see a good dermatologist and possibly an allergist. Then, you'll have to do your own detective work. I had a severe rash that began at my feet and covered my body all the way to my scalp. The was several years ago. Turns out, I had suddenly become sensitive to many substances, including those in washing powders and beauty products, as well as food colorings. A very good dermatologist got me started by first pinpointing propylene glycol, which is present in many beauty products and foods. By trial and error, I 've learned to avoid the rashes. Noting that a rash developed around my bra and panties after they were laundered, I switched to a washing powder from a healthfood store and solved that problem. I also found that I cannot eat hard candies because of the food coloring and can consume no sugar substitutes except saccharin. Now I read labels carefully and mostly avoid processed foods, avoiding foods and drinks that cause a rash. Hope this helps, and good luck!"

Hives... how can I treat this? As a child, I didnt have hives. 5 yrs ago, I experienced my first hives "attack". It's just my body gradually became itchy... it was so itchy that I had to continuously scratch all over my body. But the more I scratch, the worse it got... in the end I just jumped to the shower and turned the temperature to max. It was so hot but at least it took away the itchiness. For a while... after I stop showering, I felt the itch again. Anyway where I live, we dont usually go to doctor. We just go to pharmacy and ask for medicine. That's what I did and I bought medicine that treats itchiness. It works.. but do I have to keep taking this medicine for the rest of my life? I take this medicine every 2-3 days otherwise everywhere my body will come itchy and I wont last an hour..The medicine is Cetirizine Hydrochloride. Also, not sure if this is related... but my skin has become ultra-sensitive since 5 yrs ago. What can I do?

Cindy M replied: "First of all you really need to see the Dr. to find out the bottom line of what the cause is. In the meantime go to your pharmcy and get an over the counter antihistamine such as benadryl, if you have no allergies to it that you know of. It will make you sleepy however. but you REALLY need to be seen and evaluated."

Lea replied: "Cetrizine is Zyrtec. Benadryl treats hives better than Zyrtec. Benadryl does make you drowsy. You have some kind of allergic reaction. You should go to an allergist. Sometimes, they can give you shots which will help with the allergy. Also, you can find what you are allergic to, and can avoid it. Whether or not you'll have to continue to take Zyrtec depends on the allergy."
